Professor Fred Scholz Awarded the Order of Merit (First Class) by the Sultanate of Oman

Geographer at Freie Universität Berlin honored for his commitment to excellent research on the region

№ 057/2021 from Mar 31, 2021

The geographer Fred Scholz from the Institute of Geographical Sciences at Freie Universität Berlin was recently conferred the Order of Merit (First Class) by the Sultanate of Oman. The professor emeritus was honored by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik al Said, Sultan of Oman, for his decades-long commitment to geographical studies on Oman’s Bedouin and urban areas.

Scholz documented the country’s rapid period of modernization and development post-1970 in great detail. By doing so, he made the Sultanate much more accessible to a wider array of related research disciplines. The geographer’s contributions to national education in Oman, especially through his numerous publications used widely in secondary schools, are considered highly significant. The books and articles he has written have also received acclaim in international journals and have led to a renewed interest in Oman in academia as well as on the global political stage.

S. H. Yousuf Said Mohammed Al Amri, the Sultanate of Oman’s ambassador to Germany, presented the distinguished scholar with a gold medal at a ceremony at the Embassy of Oman with a limited number of participants due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
