Argentinian Author Samanta Schweblin to Become Visiting Professor at Freie Universität Berlin

Announcement of the 43rd Samuel Fischer Visiting Professorship at the Peter Szondi Institute of Comparative Literature

The award-winning Argentinian author Samanta Schweblin has been appointed Samuel Fischer Visiting Professor at Freie Universität Berlin for the 2020/2021 winter semester. As a faculty member of the Peter Szondi Institute of Comparative Literature, she will hold a seminar entitled “Ficción, tensión y resistencia” (“Fiction, Tension, and Resistance”) that students of the university with the requisite level of Spanish level are invited to sign up for. Together with her course participants, Schweblin will read and analyze texts from the twentieth century onward written across the Americas – from the southernmost tip of South America to the extremities of northern Canada. Taking aspects of literary studies and creative writing as reference points, she will use short stories and novellas that shine a light onto narrative trends, schools of thought, and narrative forms across the Americas.

Samanta Schweblin

Samanta Schweblin has published three short story collections and two novels to date. Her work has enjoyed worldwide acclaim, having been translated into 25 languages and appearing in prestigious publications such as The New Yorker and Harper’s. She has also been awarded a number of prizes, including the illustrious Juan Rulfo Story Prize and the Premio Casa de las Américas. Alongside her writing activities, Schweblin has held workshops on creative writing in Havana, Oaxaca, Stockholm, and Beijing. She currently lives and works in Berlin.

Samuel Fischer Visiting Professorship

For the last 20 years, authors from different cultural backgrounds have been appointed Samuel Fischer Visiting Professor for one semester at the Peter Szondi Institute of Comparative Literature, Freie Universität Berlin. The program is supported by Freie Universität, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the S. Fischer publishing house, and the Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group’s event forum. The professorship aims to build bridges and foster the exchange of ideas across borders, with the objective of promoting critical reflection on world literature.
