Surveillance Culture

Lecture by Prominent Canadian Sociologist and Legal Scholar David Lyon on November 16 at Freie Universität Berlin

On November 16 the prominent Canadian sociologist and legal scholar David Lyon will give a lecture at Freie Universität Berlin on the subject of surveillance culture. Lyon, who was born in 1948, is the director of the Surveillance Studies Center and a professor of sociology and a professor of law at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario. He will give a presentation as part of a lecture series on “Surveillance and Social Order” at the John F. Kennedy Institute, Freie Universität Berlin. The lecture is entitled “Trust and Transparency in Today’s Surveillance Culture.” Lyon will address surveillance culture and everyday activities. In his lecture, he will demonstrate how the culture of surveillance in everyday life is influenced by government agencies and the economy, and will point out which forms of surveillance he considers to be useful and others that can be dangerous. In addition, he will address the issue of whether and to what degree an omnipresent culture of surveillance is relevant for issues of transparency and trust within open societies. The presentation will be in English. Admission is free.

David Lynch is considered the world’s leading scholar of surveillance studies. He has written numerous books and articles on the topic of surveillance culture, including reflections on changes following 9/11 and whistleblower Edward Snowden’s disclosures. He has received numerous awards for his work in Canada, Switzerland, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Most recently he received the Surveillance Studies Network Outstanding Contribution Award in 2018.
