How Do Feelings Influence People’s Sense of Justice?

International Conference on Justice Research on September 27 and 28, 2018, at Freie Universität Berlin

№ 248/2018 from Sep 25, 2018

An international conference at Freie Universität Berlin will address affective and emotional dimensions of justice. Based on case studies from Africa, researchers in social and cultural anthropology will explore how and under what circumstances people perceive situations as just or unfair. The conference is being organized by a subproject of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) “Affective Societies: Dynamics of Social Coexistence in Mobile Worlds.” The dates are September 27 and 28. It is open to the public and free of charge. Registration is requested: https://conference.imp.fu-berlin.de/sentiments-justice-africa/registration.

“Throughout the world, people make assessments of justice and injustice regarding their actions. But they do not do this in the same way all over the world,” explains the managing director and coordinator of the CRC “Affective Societies,” Katharina Metz. In order to understand why people find certain normative orders to be legitimate or illegitimate, it is important to understand more clearly the moral sensibilities of people in their everyday lives. So far, however, according to Katharina Metz, justice research focuses on political, economic, social, and cultural contexts in which people position themselves on issues, while the aspect of feelings of justice is less explored.
