Lion Dance, Beijing Opera, and Tea Ceremony

Confucius Institute at Freie Universität Berlin to Host Open House on September 22, 2018

“China: Identity and Change” is the motto of this year’s Open House Day at the Confucius Institute at Freie Universität. Visitors can expect a varied program. You can experience artistic performances, learn more about the Chinese Beijing Opera and tea culture, and try hands-on workshops in Chinese calligraphy and language, as well as Chinese comic drawings (Manhua). The event is public, and admission is free.

The day will start with a kung fu show with lion dance. Later the Beijing opera performer and calligrapher Chen Ning will demonstrate a number of examples from various opera styles to show the historical change of the Beijing Opera and give a presentation on the development of Chinese calligraphy. The traditional tea ceremony is an expression of the history and aesthetics of Chinese tea culture. Two exhibits, Cai Yuanpei (1868–1940). Ein Leben für die Bildung and Pekingoper. Traum und Leben illustrate facets of China’s history, society, and culture.
