Humboldt Research Fellowship for Prof. Dr. Itay Sapir
Israeli Art Historian Is Visiting Scholar at Freie Universität Berlin

The Israeli art historian Itay Sapir won a Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. A professor of art history specialized in art of the early modern period in Europe, Sapir will be a visiting scholar at the Art History Institute, Freie Universität Berlin, until July 2019, where he will deal with art of the 17th century. His host at Freie Universität is Professor Dr. Klaus Krüger at the Department of History and Cultural Studies.
Itay Sapir first studied history at Tel Aviv University. In 2008 he earned a doctorate in art history from Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) and École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. Sapir is currently an associate professor at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), Canada. As part of his research fellowship at Freie Universität he will examine motifs of Apollonian and Dionysian art of the 17th century and their historical representation. Apollonian and Dionysian is a contrasting pair of concepts borrowed from the Greek gods Apollo and Dionysus, with Apollonian standing for form and order, and Dionysian for intoxication.
The Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers is a program of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation that awards up to 500 fellowships annually to postdoctoral researchers as well as more experienced researchers around the world. The Foundation maintains a network of more than 28,000 Humboldt alumni from all disciplines.
