Freie Universität Berlin Wins Start-up Competition

First Place in Berlin-Brandenburg Business Plan Competition (BPW) for Start-up Support at Freie Universität

№ 180/2018 from Jul 04, 2018

Freie Universität Berlin has once again been named Ideenschmiede Berlin (“powerhouse of ideas”) in the Berlin-Brandenburg Business Plan Competition (BPW). Dr.-Ing. Andrea Bör, the provost of Freie Universität Berlin, accepted the award on Wednesday in the atrium of the Investitionsbank Berlin. The award is based on the evaluation of submitted business ideas from both quantitative as well as qualitative perspectives. Technische Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin came in second and third places. Since 2006, Freie Universität Berlin has won the first-place award seven times for the competition among universities in Berlin. The title Ideenschmiede Brandenburg went to the European University Viadrina.

Provost Dr.-Ing. Andrea Bör expressed her pleasure over the award and explained that the already successful start-up support of the three major Berlin universities and their medical school Charité – Universitätsmedizin gained even more impetus with their common University Startup Factory. “With funding from the Berlin Senate and the European Social Fund, we can jointly support a total of up to 70 start-ups with two to four start-up scholarships of 2,000 euros per person by the end of 2019. With these funds we can ensure that the excellent business plans will eventually lead to innovative companies.”

The Berlin-Brandenburg Business Plan Competition (BPW) supports founders in three stages on their way from formulating an idea to working out a business concept. In 2018 a total of 327 business plans were submitted by 540 participants. The competition is organized by the Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB), the Investitionsbank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB), and the Association of Business Associations in Berlin and Brandenburg (UVB).
