Global Perspectives on Academic Freedom

Lecture on June 6 as part of a lecture series dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the founding of Freie Universität Berlin

№ 132/2018 from Jun 05, 2018

Academic freedom in a global perspective is the focus of a lecture and discussion on June 6, 2018, at Freie Universität Berlin. The invited guests include Sari Hanafi, a professor of sociology at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, Professor Amit Prakash from Jawarharlal Nehru University in India, and the journalist and former director of the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Kent, U.K., Professor Joanna Williams. The discussion will take place in English. The guests will discuss, among other issues, how academic freedom has developed historically in the Middle East, India, and Europe. This will include considering how universities can maintain their autonomy even under difficult political conditions. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Marianne Braig from the Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. The event is public, and admission is free. It is part of the lecture series “Veritas, Justitia, Libertas – Contours of a Value-oriented University of the Future,” which Freie Universität Berlin is organizing in 2018 to mark the occasion of the 70th anniversary of its founding.

The next event of the series will be held on June 28, 2018, at 4:15 p.m., when Joybrato Mukherjee will give a lecture on the limits of internationalization. Mukherjee, who is an English studies scholar, is the president of Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen. Since 2012 he has been the vice president of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). In his English-language lecture on “The Limits of Internationalization,” Mukherjee will address, among other things, the issue of what universities can do in light of the endangerment of academic freedom in teaching and research at some of their foreign partner universities.
