George Sarton Medal for Prof. Dr. Czeguhn

Legal scholar Professor Dr. Ignacio Czeguhn will receive the 2017 George Sarton Medal from Ghent University on November 23. With this award he is being recognized for his contributions to the history of the European Supreme Court and comparative legal history. The medal will be presented by the chairperson of the Sarton Committee, Professor Dr. Robert Rubens. As part of the award ceremony, Professor Czeguhn will give a lecture on the history and legal development of the German colonial societies. The lecture will appear in the annually published journal Sartoniana.
Ignacio Czeguhn, who was born in 1966, studied law at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. He then worked as a researcher at the Institute of Civil Law and Commercial Law at the University of Würzburg and from 1997 as a researcher at the Chair of Civil Law, European Legal History and Civil Procedure in Würzburg. He was also in charge of the specialized language course "Spanish Legal Language." In 2001 Czeguhn earned his doctorate in law from the Faculty of Law in Würzburg. His doctoral thesis was on the topic of Castilian supreme jurisdiction between 1250 and 1520. For his thesis he won a special award from the scholarship and awards foundation at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg.
Czeguhn has been an adjunct lecturer at the University of Granada since 2004. In 2006 he completed the habilitation process (required for professors to teach at German universities) in civil law, German and European legal and constitutional history, and comparative legal history at the University of Würzburg, and he was subsequently hired as a substitute professor at both the University of Konstanz and Freie Universität Berlin. In 2009 he was appointed a professor of law, civil law, German and European legal history, and comparative legal history at Freie Universität. Since 2012 he has been a principal investigator at the TOPOI Cluster of Excellence, and he investigates the judgments of Islamic water courts from the 9th to the 11th century. His main fields of research are the history of European supreme jurisdiction, judicial history, family law, and inheritance law.
The George Sarton Medal was named in honor of George Sarton (1884–1956), one of the founding fathers of the history of science as an academic discipline and a graduate of Ghent University. In 1984, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, Ghent University founded a Sarton Chair in the History of Science. Each year the Sarton Committee, composed of faculty representatives, selects the Sarton Chair holder and the Sarton Medal winners.
