Let the good life begin! – 2017 Campus Days on Sustainability and Climate Protection

Action Days to promote sustainable development: July 3 to 7, 2017

№ 171/2017 from Jun 27, 2017

Sustainable life styles and consumption styles and the culture of making things yourself are the topics of the fourth "Campus Days for Climate Protection + Sustainability" from July 3 to 7, 2017 at Freie Universität. For these action days, students at Freie Universität organized 11 events under the slogan of "It’s easy being green." Anyone who is interested can join in a variety of activities around Habelschwerdter Allee, including a bicycle repair café, a sewing workshop where visitors can learn how to make new items of clothing out of old ones, and an interactive supermarket, where information is provided about the production of food. The Campus Days for Climate Protection + Sustainability are being hosted by the sustainability initiative SUSTAIN IT! at Freie Universität.

Over five days students at Freie Universität Berlin are offering a varied program from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can get involved themselves in a workshop on "Do-It-Yourself Natural Cosmetics" or in the bicycle repair café. There will also be a clothing exchange and upcycling sewing workshop, where a fashion designer will demonstrate how to make new clothing out of old jeans, shirts, and skirts. Visitors can get involved and upcycle their own used clothing that they bring along. A "Market of Sustainable Opportunities" will provide an overview of regional and local sustainability initiatives at Freie Universität and in Berlin as well as information about projects and places to get involved. The "Sustainable Cinema" will show films such as "More than Honey" or "Agrokalypse" to be followed by discussions.

For the first time, in addition to the student volunteers in the SUSTAIN IT! initiative, other students from Freie Universität will also be involved as part of their curriculum at the university. For a whole semester they took a seminar at the Department of Political and Social Sciences entitled "Participation in Theoryx and Practice – The Campus as a Living Lab" where they addressed sustainability and participation and developed participatory event concepts for the Campus Days. One of these will take place on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, in cooperation with a Berlin non-profit association called FairBindung. The public event is entitled "Let the good life begin" and there will be a discussion about living together according to ecological and social norms. From Monday through Wednesday, visitors can go through various stations of an interactive supermarket, where they will be able to learn something about the "ecological footprint" and the hidden water consumption in the production of food. At another event students will be encouraged to engage in a conversation based on creative association methods and state their opinions in an interactive exhibition.
