Sustainable Research, Sustainable Construction
New Science Building for Biodiversity Research in Dahlem
№ 133/2017 from May 24, 2017
The architectural competition for the construction of a new science building for biodiversity research on the Dahlem research campus is over. The first place was awarded to Glass Kramer Löbbert bda – Gesellschaft von Architekten. The requirements were stiff as the new building is supposed to reach the highest quality level "Gold" in sustainable construction. An exhibition displaying all the submissions will open on Monday, May 29, at 4 p.m. in the foyer of the Institute of Plant Physiology and Microbiology, Freie Universität Berlin, Königin-Luise-Straße 12-14. The new building to be constructed at Königin-Luise-Straße 28-30 is a cooperation project of Freie Universität Berlin and the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) in the Forschungsverbund Berlin. Total construction costs of 17.8 million euros are being planned for the new building.
The cooperation partners of the new building – Freie Universität represented by its Director of Administration and Finance, Dr.-Ing. Andrea Bör, and IGB, represented by the managing director of the Forschungsverbund Berlin, Dr. Manuela Urban – will open the exhibition. All of the other competing architects who received some form of recognition for their submissions will also be present. The event is open to the general public.
By constructing the biodiversity science building together, Freie Universität Berlin and the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries aim to demonstrate how productive cooperation between university and non-university research facilities in Berlin can be. Research and teaching in an important field for the future such as biodiversity can be strengthened and further developed together in a building that not only will serve environmental research, but also meets strict guidelines for sustainable construction.
In order to achieve the desired high quality level "Gold" according to the assessment system for sustainable construction of federal buildings in Germany (BNB) in the laboratory building module, the submitted design for the planned building had to be convincing both in terms of urban development and design, as well as in fulfilling the principles of energy optimization and sustainable construction. It is intended to embody the theme of sustainability as an idea for the future, both scientifically and through its architecture.
The exhibition of the submissions to the architectural completion will be on display in the foyer of the Institute of Plant Physiology and Microbiology, Freie Universität Berlin, Königin-Luise-Straße 12–14, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. working days from May 30 through June 13, 2017.
