Recognition for Prof. Dr. Sarah Hedtrich

Research on Skin-Dryness Award (R.O.S.A.) for Pharmacologist at Freie Universität

№ 268/2016 from Aug 02, 2016

Dr. Sarah Hedtrich, a junior professor of pharmacology at Freie Universität Berlin, was awarded the Research on Skin-Dryness Award (ROSA) in the field of atopic dermatitis. The award, with grant money of 8,000 euros, is awarded every two years and recognizes scientists for research that sets trends in the pathogenesis, prevention, or therapy of pathologically dry skin. The research group led by Sarah Hedtrich succeeded in breaking down interactions between genetically determined barrier defects of the skin and inflammatory mediators in atopic dermatitis. The award is sponsored by La Roche-Posay Laboratoire Dermatologique of Germany.

Sarah Hedtrich studied pharmacy at the University of Leipzig and earned her doctorate in 2009 from Freie Universität Berlin. She had postdoctoral positions at Harvard University and Tufts University in Boston, as well as at Freie Universität Berlin and LMU Munich. Since 2015 she has been a junior professor of pharmacology at Freie Universität with an emphasis on reducing animal research at the Institute of Pharmacy. One major focus of her research group is the reconstruction of healthy and diseased human skin in vitro. Her team investigates the pathophysiological mechanisms of inflammatory skin diseases using three-dimensional skin models, while avoiding animal experiments altogether.
