№ 228/2015 from Jul 20, 2015
This year's third and last term of the international Summer and Winter University of Freie Universität Berlin, FUBiS, started on Sunday with participants from 34 countries. During the four-week term, 368 students will be taking German courses and other classes. They were welcomed by Dr. Matthias Dannenberg, the Executive Deputy Director of Administration and Finance of Freie Universität Berlin. Most of the students are from the United States, China, and South Korea. The term will run through August 15.
Participants in FUBiS can choose between German language courses and other classes taught in English, or a combination of both. The classes taught in English cover diverse subjects, for example, European politics, architecture, art history, and German literature. For all of the courses, the students can earn internationally recognized credits. The academic program takes place on the campus of Freie Universität, and it is complemented by excursions, for example, a boat trip on the Spree River and a guided of the Reichstag. The participants can also take day and weekend trips to Potsdam, Rostock, and Leipzig.
The Summer University was initiated in 1998, and the winter term was added in 2007. In 2010 the academic quality of FUBiS was recognized by the Forum on Education Abroad. In 2014 approximately 500 students from abroad participated.
