Sustainability and the Peace Process in the Middle East
Public Panel Discussion on July 15, 2015, at Freie Universität Berlin
№ 220/2015 from Jul 10, 2015
A panel discussion to be held on July 15, 2015, at Freie Universität Berlin will address sustainability and the peace process in the Middle East. Scientists from Israel, the Palestinian territories, Germany, and Canada will grapple with the issue of how the use of water and energy resources both promotes and blocks the peace process. The conference is being held in the context of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel. It was organized by the Environmental Policy Research Centre of Freie Universität Berlin (FFU). The conference is being supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. It is public, and admission is free.
The public panel discussion is part of a two-day conference focusing on environmental protection, the sustainable management of resources, and climate change in the context of the political situation in the Middle East. The participants will address various issues, including just distribution, "water diplomacy," and social commitment in the area of environmental protection.
The 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel characterizes the academic program of Freie Universität Berlin. Together with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem as well as in cooperation with several other Israeli universities, Freie Universität is holding numerous conferences and workshops. Since the beginning of the 1950s, Freie Universität has been cooperating with various partner universities in Israel. The university intends to expand its cooperation in research, teaching, and support for junior researchers even further. The Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Israel took up diplomatic relations on May 12, 1965. German-Israeli cooperation in science and research paved the way for the beginning of diplomatic relations.
