Freie Universität at Rank 86 Worldwide

№ 290/2013 from Oct 04, 2013

Freie Universität Berlin, according to the latest World University Rankings by the highly regarded journal, Times Higher Education (THE), is one of the four best universities in Germany. As announced by THE in London, Freie Universität ranked 86 in the overall world rankings, an improvement of 42 positions since the last such rankings. In the humanities subjects, LMU Munich at rank 21 and Freie Universität Berlin at rank 22 are the best German universities. In two additional subject groups, Freie Universität is among the top 100 universities: in the social sciences at rank 87 and in the life sciences at rank 94.

According to the 2013-2014 THE World University Rankings, the four best German universities are Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (rank 55), Georg-August-Universität Göttingen (rank 63), Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (rank 68), and Freie Universität Berlin (rank 86).

The president of Freie Universität, Prof. Dr. Peter-André Alt, said these latest results are further evidence of the university's outstanding international reputation. Furthermore, it is gratifying that the university's overall world rank improved and that the performance of the humanities subjects has continued to rank among the best universities in the world. In the THE Rankings, the humanities subjects at Freie Universität Berlin continuously improved from rank 34 in 2010 to rank 22 in 2013.

That Freie Universität now ranked among the world's 100 best universities in the life sciences, is a good indication of the university's performance capabilities in this important area of research, as emphasized by the university's director of finance and administration, Peter Lange. In this context Lange directed another appeal to the Berlin Senate that the renovation of the university's Chemistry Building is urgently required to ensure that the necessary structural facilities are in place to enable scientists at Freie Universität Berlin to continue to successfully compete in an international setting.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are based partly on a global survey of academics with regard to research, teaching, and international outlook, as well as the citation frequency of publications and various statistical data.
