Learning to Read Arabic Manuscripts
Islamic Studies Scholars at Freie Universität Berlin and Staff of the Berlin State Library Organize Paleography Workshop to Be Held March 19 to 23, 2012

Scholars at the "Intellectual History of the Islamicate World" Research Unit organized by Professor Sabine Schmidtke of Freie Universität Berlin, in cooperation with the Berlin State Library, are organizing a workshop to introduce young scholars to Arabic manuscript studies. The workshop "Arabic Manuscript Studies: An Introduction" to be held March 19 to 23, 2012, is aimed at advanced graduate students of Arabic and Islamic Studies as well as other interested parties. Funded by the Center for International Cooperation of Freie Universität Berlin, it will be headed by Dr. Adam Gacek, a lecturer in Arabic Studies and former head librarian of the Islamic Studies Library at McGill University (Montreal). Gacek will be giving the opening lecture on March 16, 2012. It will be held in English and is open to the public.
In Islamic Studies and Arabic Studies, there is a strong trend toward basic research. This is due to many obvious gaps in the research, but also to the vast amount of almost untapped manuscript holdings in the Middle East and Central Asia, as well as in the libraries of Europe, Russia, and North America. The relatively late introduction of the printing press in the Middle East meant that the manuscript tradition lasted until the 19th, and sometimes even into the 20th century.
