“The German Chinese Man”

Granddaughter of the Composer Qing Zhu to Give a Reading at the Confucius Institute at Freie Universität Berlin

Chong Liao, an author of Chinese origin, will give a reading on March 11, 2010, at the Confucius Institute at Freie Universität Berlin. Chong Liao will be reading from her biography about her grandfather, the composer Qing Zhu. The title of the biography is Der deutsche Chinese. The event will be chaired by Dagmar Yu-Dembski, director of the Confucius Institute, and Dr. Michael Friedrichs of Wißner-Verlag Augsburg. The reading is open to the public and free of charge.

Qing Zhu is the stage name under which the artist, musicologist, and poet Shang Guo Liao was known in China. In her biography about her grandfather, Chong Liao describes how after his law studies in Berlin, he developed his work amid private and political turmoil and generational and cultural conflicts. Qing Zhu integrated Western music in his work, and in Shanghai he composed China’s first modern musical work.
