Lecture | Antrittsvorlesung Elena Mäder-Baumdicker: "Geometric variational problems -- analytical challenges and applications in differential topology"
Critical points of geometric functionals, their properties and deformations towards them lie at the heart of the research area Geometric variational problems. In this talk, I will introduce the general framework, present representative results, and outline some key techniques used in their proofs. I will state important principles in some generality but also try to lead through that field with the help of some examples. Particular emphasis will be placed on the analytical challenges arising from the nonlinear nature of the governing partial differential equations. Finally, I will illustrate how these methods can be applied in differential topology by explaining a result on the topological structure of the space of spherical immersions in R3.
Right before the lecture, at 13:15, there will be an informal get-together (also in room 019 in A3) with sandwiches, cake, hot and cold beverages, to which you are also warmly invited.
