Una Europa Lecture: Living Lab. Bienen, Biodiversität, urbane Nachhaltigkeit.

Nov 01, 2023 | 04:00 PM - 06:00 PM

Event will be held in German.

In the first Berlin "Una Europa Lecture" we would like to introduce the importance of biodiversity and the crucial role of bees for biodiversity to an audience interested in science.

In a panel discussion, Christian Dreher (Freie Universität Berlin), Sophie Lokatis (Deutsche Wildtier Stiftung), and Randolf Menzel (Freie Universität Berlin) share fascinating insights from their fields of research - from biochemistry to neurobiology to veterinary medicine - and provide answers to the question of how we can contribute to urban biodiversity.

Following the discussion, the audience is invited to openly exchange ideas with the panelists and other experts. In an exhibition with handouts and showcases, head beekeeper Stephanie Ludewig (Freie Universität Berlin) will provide information about beekeeping on the campus of FU Berlin. Tim Landgraf (Freie Universität Berlin) from the Dahlem Center for Machine Learning and Robotics will provide insights into the complex work of bee robots from his research project "Hiveopolis". Further illustrative information on how FU Berlin supports biodiversity and how we can make Berlin more sustainable in our everyday lives will be provided by PhD student Rebecca Rongstock (Freie Universität Berlin), who coordinates the "Blühender Campus" initiative.

The event is organized by Una Europa, an alliance of 11 research-intensive universities (including FU Berlin) that aims to promote sustainability as part of its Sustainability and Climate Protection Strategy. To this end, Una Europa calls for the commitment of individual partner universities so that strong and sustainable communities can emerge at the local level, empowering students, researchers, and employees of the universities to actively shape their campus and thus their city.
