Professors at the Institute for East European Studies

With holdings of roughly one million volumes, the Social Science Library and Library of the Institute for East European Studies is currently the largest departmental library of Freie Universität Berlin.Founded in 1951, the Institute for East European Studies is an interdisciplinary regional studies institute at Freie Universität Berlin.The Institute for East European Studies is one of three interdisciplinary regional studies institutes at Freie Universität. Research conducted at the institute deals with Eastern Europe, Central Europe, and Southeastern Europe.The Institute for East European Studies is located at Garystr. 55 in Dahlem.Research and teaching at the institute focus on contemporary issues, especially those related to the processes of transformation in Eastern Europe, as well as the underlying historical conditions.

At a Glance

The Institute for East European Studies is one of the three interdisciplinary central institutes at Freie Universität, all of which focus on area studies. The institute’s research and teaching on the Dahlem campus reflect the diverse processes of change on the Eastern part of the European continent.

The region is heterogeneous, conflict-ridden, and very important, and with regard to the expansion of the European Union, there are many issues and challenges to be addressed.

Teaching at the Institute for East European Studies focuses around the multidisciplinary master’s degree program on East European Studies, which was developed several years ago, as well as the distance learning master’s program on East European Studies.

The institute’s research focuses on contemporary issues, especially those related to the processes of transformation in East Central, Southeastern, and Eastern Europe as well as the underlying historical conditions.

Other areas of research are the investigation of cultural issues as well as ethno-national conflicts in Eastern Europe.
