The Institute of Mathematics provides education from the Bachelor to the PhD level in a variety of mathematical disciplines, both theoretical and applied, as well as in the Didactics of Mathematics. Research at the Institute is conducted in Algebra, Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Geometry, Number Theory, Numerical Mathematics, Probability Theory, Scientific Computing and Data Science. The numerous research groups, lead by eminent scientists, are internationally well-connected, and fully immersed in the highly collaborative Berlin mathematical environment via several third-party projects.

MATH+, the Berlin Mathematics Research Center, is a cross-institutional and interdisciplinary Cluster of Excellence,
funded by the DFG within its nationwide excellence strategy. It sets out to explore and further develop new approaches in application-oriented mathematics. Emphasis is placed on mathematical principles for using ever larger amounts of data in life and material sciences, in energy and network research, and in the humanities and social sciences. MATH+ is a joint project of the three major universities in Berlin – Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin – as well as the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) and the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB).

The Berlin Mathematical School is the joint graduate school of the mathematics departments of the three universities, offering a uniform setting for graduate studies (Master and PhD) in mathematics in Berlin, with a coordinated, diverse course program in English, intensive mentoring, and a highly international student body. The DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center 1114 examines methodologies for the modelling and simulation of complex processes involving cascades of scales derived from prototypical challenges in the natural sciences.
