At the Institute of Prehistoric Archaeology at Freie Universität particular emphasis is placed upon the study of the development of sedentism in Europe during the Neolithic period (c. 8000 B.C.) until the migration period.

At a Glance

Ancient Studies at Freie Universität consists of a close association between the disciplines of Egyptology, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Classical Archaeology, Prehistoric Archaeology, Near Eastern Archaeology, and the Languages and Cultures of South Asia.

The main focus is on the early stages of human history with a wide geographical and temporal context. It encompasses the early civilizations of Egypt, the Near East, and Central and East Asia. It covers the area and period from prehistoric and ancient Europe to the New World in South America. Based on various sources and interdisciplinary comparison, such a vast horizon facilitates an understanding of the development of cultural achievements.
