Consecutive Master’s Degree Programs

You should only apply for a master's degree program if you are sure that you will earn your first professional degree qualifying you for further study (usually a bachelor’s degree) by the time you enroll or during the first semester of the master’s program at the latest. In general, you must have successfully completed all mandatory coursework for your bachelor’s degree program, although it is possible to begin the master’s degree program with only two-thirds completed. You must prove you have completed the remaining third by the end of your first semester at the latest.

The final grade of your bachelor’s degree must be clearly shown on your degree certificate or transcript. If this is not the case, you will be included in the admissions procedure but your place on the shortlist for your preferred master’s degree program will be negatively affected. Please contact the university or college you have attended to date for confirmation of your final grade (or final grade point average). Freie Universität Berlin is not responsible for calculating final grades itself, nor does it accept estimated final grades from students.

Specific requirements are listed under each individual consecutive master’s degree program on the master’s programs page. Please consult the language requirements for master’s degree programs as well.

Enrollment

If you have been successful in your application, you will receive an admission notice (Zulassungsbescheid). You will need to enroll in order to begin your studies. This means that you are officially registered as a student at Freie Universität Berlin. Please note that you will still be required to submit additional documents at this stage. You will also need to pay the semester fees and contributions.

Your enrollment marks the beginning of your study period at Freie Universität. It is important that you understand how your degree program is structured and the specific arrangements surrounding examinations. You should also have a good overview of other important regulations. The numerous introductory events and orientation days held across the university and within individual departments are designed to help you get your time at Freie Universität Berlin off to the best possible start.
