The American historian Mary Lindemann from the University of Miami has won a Reimar Lüst Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Lindemann was nominated by Prof. Dr. Alexander Schunka from the Department of History and Cultural Studies, Freie Universität Berlin. Beginning in October she will start doing research at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute of History, Freie Universität. The award was presented in recognition of the lifetime achievements of Lindemann, an internationally renowned historian, who for decades has been committed to academic exchange between the United States and Germany. In Berlin she will mainly do research on resource policy in the northern and central German territories in the 17th century, the period during and following the Thirty Years' War.

Mary Lindemann received her graduate education in history at the University of Cincinnati and did her dissertation research in Hamburg. In 1980 she earned her doctorate from the University of Cincinnati. Since 2004 she has been a professor of history at the University of Miami. She is currently the president of the German Studies Association. Her main areas of research are Early Modern Europe and the history of medicine. She is highly recognized internationally and the recipient of numerous awards. Her current research focuses mainly on early modern German, Dutch, and Flemish history as well as the history of medicine during that period.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation presents the Reimar Lüst Award to highly regarded humanities scholars from abroad who, through their research, have shaped academic and cultural relations between Germany and their own countries. Every year the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in collaboration with the Fritz Thyssen Foundation grants up to two Reimar Lüst Awards.
