Welcome@FUBerlin Program: Sign-up for New Courses

German Classes, Preparatory Courses, Child Care, Guest Student Status at Freie Universität Berlin for Refugees Interested in Studying / Information Session on April 20, 2017

№ 071/2017 from Apr 07, 2017

Refugees interested in studying at the university can sign up for German language classes and preparatory courses at Freie Universität from now until May 31, 2017. The offerings are part of the Welcome@FUBerlin program open to individuals registered as refugees and who have a university entrance qualification from their home country. Registration for the language classes and preparatory courses is possible via an online form or at the Student Service Center (SSC) of Freie Universität. The language prerequisite is German at the A2 level for the language classes and B1 for the preparatory courses offered by the Studienkolleg. The classes will start at the beginning of September. On April 20, 2017, there will be an information session where interested persons can find out more about the classes offered within the Welcome@FUBerlin program, as well as the new possibilities for child care for those participating in the program and how to become a guest student at Freie Universität during the current spring/summer semester. The information session is public, and admission is free. No registration is needed. Following the session, there will be an opportunity for members of the press to speak with the organizers and some participants in the program.

On April 20 staff involved in the Welcome@FUBerlin program will present information about the academic program. The presentations will be in English and will describe the advisory services, the prerequisites for admission, and the German classes. In addition, they will tell about the new opportunities for child care and the guest student program. To make it easier for mothers and fathers to participate in the Welcome@FUBerlin courses, Freie Universität is offering a limited number of child care spaces for parents taking a German language class. As guest students, refugees will also be able to attend selected courses at Freie Universität free of charge during the 2017 spring/summer semester. For those with sufficient German skills, it will be possible to obtain credits that may later be applied for a degree program.

The Welcome@FUBerlin program also offers refugees help from a student partner – a buddy –, language tandems for mutual language learning, free computer courses, and participation in courses offered by the University Sports Center. Currently more than 200 individuals are enrolled in the preparatory courses at Freie Universität. The Welcome@FUBerlin program was launched by Freie Universität in 2015. It aims to enable refugees in Berlin and Brandenburg to continue studies they began in their home countries or to start a degree program in Germany. The program is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service and the Berlin Senate Administration for Science and Research.
