№ 319/2016 from Sep 29, 2016

The Israeli historian Prof. Dr. Raanan Rein from Tel Aviv University has been granted a Reimar Lüst Award for International Scholarly and Cultural Exchange. With this award, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation are recognizing Rein's exceptional contributions to the enduring promotion of bilateral relations between Germany and Israel in and through the field of academic studies. The award is endowed with 60,000 euros and includes a research stay at the Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität. As part of the award ceremony, Professor Raanan Rein will give a lecture at the Institute for Latin American Studies on October 26, 2016. The lecture will address "Latin American Populism Revisited." The event is public, and admission is free.

"Largely due to Raanan Rein's efforts in recent years, Tel Aviv University and Freie Universität have continuously increased their cooperation," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Rinke from the Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität, who nominated Rein for the award. During his stay in Berlin in conjunction with the award, Rein will continue to build up his networks with universities and academic institutions in Germany. Rinke stressed that this will be very beneficial for Latin American historiography and Latin American studies in general as well as for migration research.

The historian Raanan Rein has influenced his field of research with his work, including more than 30 books. He holds the Elias Sourasky Chair for Latin American and Spanish History at Tel Aviv University, and he is also the vice president of the university. Rein's research focuses on the history of Argentina, the Jewish migration and diaspora in Latin America, and the history of sports and studies of populism based on the example of Peronism, a movement in Argentina that was named after the former President Juan Domingo Perón Sosa (1895-1974). His publications are included among the standard works in all of these fields. He has published in Hebrew, English, and Spanish.

Professor Rein is currently working in the field of new ethnic studies, which allows for a context-sensitive transnational approach to the study of ethnic minorities and diaspora situations. He will continue working on this approach in collaboration with researchers at the Institute for Latin American Studies at Freie Universität.
