Dahlem Humanities Center at Freie Universität Berlin Has a New Board
Historian Prof. Dr. Paul Nolte Is the New Director

A new board consisting of four humanities scholars was appointed at the Dahlem Humanities Center (DHC), Freie Universität Berlin. The new board members took of their work on February 1, 2016. They are Beatrice Gründler, Professor of Arabic Language and Literatures, Anita Traninger, Professor of Romance Languages and Literature, Matthias Warstat, Professor of Theater Studies, and Paul Nolte, Professor of History. The previous director, who was also the founding director of the DHC, Professor Joachim Küpper (Romance Languages and Literatures), as well as board members Professor Erika Fischer-Lichte and Professor Klaus W. Hempfer have resigned from their posts. Professor Paul Nolte was appointed the new director. Born in 1963, Paul Nolte is Professor of Modern History with an emphasis on Contemporary History at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute of Freie Universität Berlin. He is also managing editor and co-editor of a number of renowned academic journals and book series. The new board members, just as the outgoing ones, are internationally experienced professors who have rendered outstanding services to research and teaching at Freie Universität. The president of Freie Universität Berlin, Professor Peter-André Alt, paid tribute to the work of the outgoing board, and in particular to that of Professor Joachim Küpper as pioneering and innovative.
The new board aims to build upon the success of its predecessors in regional and international networking in the humanities and to increase the visibility of humanities outside the university. Successful event formats will be continued, such as the Hegel Lectures, which in the past were held by such eminent figures as Judith Butler, André Glucksmann, and Slavoj Žižek. An important function of DHS will continue to be generating new research projects in the humanities. In addition, the new board is planning to create new research and event formats that will deal with fundamental issues of the humanities disciplines in a social context.
Founded in 2007, the Dahlem Humanities Center builds on the most complete range of disciplines in the humanities to be found in Germany. Through various events at DHC, scholars, writers, intellectuals, and artists from home and abroad give members of the university and the broader public insights into their current work and research. Visiting scholars from around the world conduct research at DHC, which is one of five Focus Areas of Freie Universität. The transdisciplinary research platforms facilitate interdisciplinary exchange on current, future-oriented topics and the development of new research collaborations and projects.
