Language Use in Later Life

Research Workshop of Université catholique de Louvain and Freie Universität Berlin from December 7 to 9, 2015

№ 369/2015 from Nov 20, 2015

How does language use change with increasing age? What can psychologists learn from linguists and vice versa? And how can the findings of linguistic research be useful for health care workers, care givers, relatives, and senior citizens themselves? These and other issues will be addressed by the participants of a research workshop that will take place from December 7 to 9, 2015, at Universität Louvain (UCL). The workshop is being organized jointly by Dr. Catherine T. Bolly (Universität zu Köln / UCL) and Prof. Dr. Annette Gerstenberg (Freie Universität Berlin), the founders of the CLARe (Corpora for Language and Aging Research) network. The meeting is open to the public, and admission is free.

Research on the connection between language and age is being done in various fields, but the involved subdisciplines are hardly interlinked, explains Annette Gerstenberg, a professor of Romance linguistics at Freie Universität. The workshop thus aims to bring together leading scholars in the various fields. The participants include researchers in linguistics and psycholinguistics, geriatric psychiatry and neuropsychology, sign language, and applied linguistics. They will address linguistic problems that may occur in old age, but also developments in so-called normal aging. The focus will be on research projects that use the corpora of spoken language. In two round tables the participants will examine which voice data are evaluated in audio and video formats in the individual projects: What methods of preparation and analysis are used? What programs of automatic analysis or program-based transcription are used? How are the data obtained, and what additional issues could they be used for? There is great potential here for networking: In a third round table the participants will address the perspectives for further interdisciplinary and international cooperation.

The workshop is being sponsored by the Institut Langage et Communication and the Valibel Research Center, both at Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium, Freie Universität Berlin, the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS), and the French research centers CNRS and IRCOM.
