Music – Bridge to Harmony

Musical Events on the Day of Confucius Institutes on September 26

№ 276/2015 from Sep 22, 2015

Lyrical, jazz, classical, or modern: On the World Day of Confucius Institutes on September 26, 2015, the events at the Confucius Institute of Freie Universität Berlin will all be musical presentations or related to music. The Chinese character represents both music (yue) and joy (le) and indicates that music has a particularly sensuous meaning in China. The philosopher Confucius understood music as a moral instrument for obtaining "cosmic harmony." Visitors to the institute in Dahlem will encounter a varied program: Under the motto "Music – Bridge to Harmony" there will be dance, song, short lectures, introductory courses, and performances. The first will be a dance performance of "Water Lilies" by a group of young women in Chinese folklore costumes. The events are public, and admission is free.

A highlight of the musical encounter between Western and Eastern styles is the performance by Duo Dong West, consisting of Vivian Lee (vocals) and Volker Greve (piano, percussion), with their program of ethnic jazz and traditional sounds. The singer and musician Chen Ning will sing arias from the classical opera repertoire as well as the 1960s and '70s in German and Chinese. As a connoisseur of the Beijing Opera, he will explain the roles of various characters of this musical theater and will demonstrate the gestures, masks, and costumes. Demonstrations of instruments such as the guqin and hulusi along with explanations will provide insight into the cultural and historical significance of the Chinese musical tradition. The introductory courses to Chinese language will also focus on music in the form of rhymes and folk songs. The Moon Festival, which is celebrated in China on the last weekend in September, will also be featured in the musical program at the Day of Confucius Institutes.
