Freie Universität Berlin Awards Honorary Doctorate to Professor Jagdish Bhagwati

Recognition for Commitment to Liberal Trade – Presentation Speech Held by Economist Paul R. Krugman

The renowned American economist Jagdish Bhagwati, professor at Columbia University in New York, has received an honorary doctorate from Freie Universität Berlin. In selecting him for this honor, the School of Business and Economics paid tribute to Bhagwati’s pioneering work on the political economy of trade relations and economic development as well as his commitment to liberal world trade. The presentation speech was given by the American economist and Nobel laureate Professor Paul R. Krugman.

The economist Jagdish Bhagwati was born in 1934 in Bombay. In 2000 he became an economic adviser to the United Nations on globalization issues and in 2001 adviser to the Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). He is a member of the academic advisory board of Human Rights Watch (Asia). Bhagwati drew attention in 2004 when he published the book In Defense of Globalization. His discussion of arguments made by critics of globalization was very well received in the business community.

The presenter, Paul R. Krugman, an American professor of economics at Princeton University and holder of an honorary doctorate from Freie Universität Berlin (1998), is considered to be the founder of the new economic geography. In 2008 he received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics. He is a widely published nonfiction author, and in the United States, particularly well known through his columns in The New York Times.
