Career Talks for Doctoral Candidates

Dahlem Research School Offers Insight into Professional Life as of October 19

Beginning October 19, Dahlem Research School of Freie Universität Berlin is inviting doctoral candidates to career talks. The opening speaker will be Holger Weyhers, who earned his doctorate in pharmacy at Freie Universität and will describe how he began to work for the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Unless otherwise noted, the Career Talks begin at 4 p.m. and and are held at Hittorfstraße 16 in Berlin-Dahlem. Journalists and others with an interest in the theme are welcome to attend.

While working on their dissertation, doctoral candidates are often faced with the question of what range of career opportunities inside and outside of research will be available to them after they have completed their doctorate. The DRS Carreer Talks  provide orientation and an exploration of opportunities in the labor market. In question and answer rounds the speakers will report on their careers and give advice. The speakers come from all academic and professional fields and work in Germany or abroad. (Where noted, the talks will be in English.)

  • October 19, 2009 Dr. Holger Weyhers: „Als Pharmazeut zu Pfizer“
    Dr. Weyhers is production manager at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (4:30 p.m.)
  • November 11,  2009 Dr. Jesús Blanco "Postdoc at the Max Planck Institute" (in English)
    The Max Planck Society with its independent research institutes is an attractive employer for those wishing to stay in research. Dr Jesús Blanco is a postdoc at the Fritz Haber Institute and will talk about the career options for young scientists within the MPG. (Starts at 6 p.m.)
  • December 16, 2009 Dr. Matteo Cavalleri "Editor at Wiley-VCH" (in English)
    One deals with them with every publication, but who thinks of the job of an editor as a career opportunity for former researchers? Dr. Matteo Cavalleri moved from a postdoc position to Wiley-VCH and will describe his motivation to do so.

  • January 14, 2010 Dr. Oliver Daumke „Helmholtz-Nachwuchsgruppenleiter“
    Einer der interessantesten Positionen für junge Forscher nach der Promotion ist die des Nachwuchsgruppenleiters oder –leiterin in einem Institut der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft.
    Dr. Oliver Daumke is at the Max Delbrück Center and will report on his experiences as a Junior Research Group Leader. (4 p.m.)
