Freie Universität’s profund Supports Egypt in Technology Transfer

Cooperation Funded by the European Union

№ 160/2009 from Jun 19, 2009

The team at Freie Universität Berlin providing assistance with founding new businesses is currently supporting Egypt in building four technology transfer centers. The project is being funded by the European Union in the amount of ca. one million euros. The aim is to facilitate the transfer of research results from Egyptian universities to the country's economy, thereby strengthening the country's innovation power. It is scheduled to run for three years.

In Egypt six universities and non-university institutions are participating in the project. In addition to Freie Universität Berlin, the European partners include Technische Universität Wien, Politechnico di Torino, and Linköping University. At the end of July, two groups of Egyptian experts will be visiting Freie Universität to learn about various possibilities for the transfer of technology.

Lisa Anderson, provost of the American University in Cairo (AUC), stressed the importance of the cooperation between Freie Universität and AUC. Freie Universität's experience in the economic exploitation of scientific innovations is an example for Egypt to emulate in learning to increase the transfer of technology and to promote entrepreneurial activities.

At Freie Universität profund has been involved in promoting the transfer of knowledge and technology since 2006. So far, more than 70 spin-off projects have been supported. Twice in a row Freie Universität was granted think-tank status in Berlin-Brandenburg's business plan competition.
