Two New Research Training Groups for Freie Universität

DFG Funds Two New Research Training Programs for Doctoral Students

№ 113/2009 from May 12, 2009

The Institute for Latin American Studies and the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Pharmacy, both of Freie Universität, have been granted new Research Training Groups by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Freie Universität is the only university to receive two new Research Training Groups. The funding for these two projects amounts to 6.2 million euros.

The new Research Training Group at the Institute for Latin American Studies, "Entre Espacios – Movimientos, Actores y Representaciones de la Globalizacion," will be cooperating with Humboldt-Universität and the University of Potsdam in Germany. In addition, it will be working in close cooperation with three Mexican research institutions in the area of social and cultural globalization research. One area of special focus is the movement between different regions of the world and the new spaces that resulted during the three phases of globalization – the colonial period, the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and in contemporary history. This is the first time that there has been German-Latin American cooperation in one of the DFG Research Training Groups in the social and cultural sciences.

The Research Training Group "Fluorine as a Key Element. Discovering Innovative Synthetic Concepts to Generate Novel Molecules with Unique Properties" of the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Pharmacy of Freie Universität  Berlin, in cooperation with Humboldt-Universität Berlin, plans to research the synthesis and characterization of fluorinated compounds and their use in catalysts, in materials research, and in pharmaceuticals and biochemistry.
