The Art of Working with Poetry
Exhibition in the University Library of Freie Universität Opens on June 20, 2008
№ 190/2008 from Jun 17, 2008
On Friday, June 20, at 4:00 p.m., an exhibition entitled "Ut pictura poesis – The Art of Working with Poetry" will be opened in the foyer of the university library of Freie Universität Berlin. The exhibit will display the results of a poetry project on ekphrasis that a university class on "Literature and Media in the Context of Teaching English" carried out with a 6th-grade class at Charles Dickens School.
Ut pictura poesis, literally "As is painting so is poetry" – the statement by the Roman poet Horace is a good description for the poetry project of Freie Universität and the elementary school. As part of the project, 20 school students and eight university students visited each others' classes and also went on a joint field trip to the Bode Museum. The focus of the project was on mutually working through the poems "Symphony in Yellow" by Oscar Wilde and "Don’t Let That Horse" by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, followed up with a visual arts implementation by the 6th graders. The resulting pictures make up this display.
The exhibit is an illustrative example of successful cooperation between schools and universities, a situation beneficial for both school and university students.
