№ 128/2008 from May 15, 2008
The Center for Global Politics of Freie Universität Berlin in collaboration with the Arab International University is organizing a two-week summer school on "Global Shifts and Transitional Politics in the Middle East" to be held in Damascus July 19–30, 2008. The program is open to graduate students who have completed a first degree (B.A. or equivalent).
The program is primarily of interest to students of political science, economics, law, or journalism. Very good English skills are needed for participation. The application deadline is June 15, 2008.
The objective of the summer school is to facilitate scholarly exchange between future leaders of Syria and other countries of the Middle East and Germany as well as to provide a stimulus for creating a network across borders. In five teaching modules the students will be introduced to new approaches, perspectives, and methods in global politics and provided with an opportunity to practice through interactive working groups and simulation games. They will learn techniques for negotiation and presentation and also improve their analytic skills.
The extra activities include excursions to various Syrian and international institutions in Damascus, such as the German House Damascus or the Orient Center for International Studies. Through expert panels the students will also have an opportunity to participate in discussions on current themes in international relations with decision makers from the fields of politics, business, and culture.
Successful participants of the Global Politics Summer School Syria will receive a certificate issued jointly by the Arab International University and Freie Universität Berlin. They will receive four ECTS credits. The registration fee is 50 euros. Travel and accommodation grants are available for students from abroad.
