Call for Applications

M.A. East European Studies Online, M.A. International Relations Online

№ 28/2008 from Feb 06, 2008

Freie Universität Berlin invites qualified applicants to apply to the master’s programs in East European Studies (EES) Online and International Relations (IR) Online, both beginning in October, 2008. The application deadline is April 30, 2008. The two English-language web-based correspondence courses (120 ECTS) are part of the program offered by the Center for Global Politics, headed by Prof. Dr. Klaus Segbers. The center studies global issues of the 21st century.

East European Studies (EES) Online

In this full-time program, Eastern Europe is studied in its political, social, legal, economic, historical and cultural contexts. Moreover, students are equipped with skills in intercultural communication, conflict management, migration, globalization, European integration, and project management.

The knowledge and skills acquired in the EES online program qualify its graduates for positions of responsibility in business, research, government, and nongovernmental organizations and associations with respect to Eastern Europe.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) included this program in its list of "TOP 10 International Master’s Degree Courses Made in Germany." In January, 2007, the program was awarded the "FU e-Learning Prize" in the category "Commitment in Teaching."

International Relations (IR) Online

This interdisciplinary program provides in-depth knowledge on theories and topics of international relations. Students acquire relevant academic and applied research skills that will enable them to classify and analyze global events and developments. Students gain additional social skills in three practice-oriented modules on intercultural communication, conflict management, and international negotiation.

IR Online is suited for junior staff in the diplomatic service, international firms, organizations, NGOs, or the media, who wish to further qualify themselves for higher positions or new career perspectives in the international realm.

Both programs are taught via a method known as blended learning, i.e. a combination of online units and face-to-face instruction. This combination of online and  in-house attendance phases combines the efficiency and flexibility of digital  learning with the social aspects of face-to-face communication.

Prerequisites for admission include:

  • A prior university degree (B.A., M.A., Diploma, state examination, etc.) preferably in the humanities, social sciences, law, or economics
  • Fluency in English (e.g., TOEFL: 80 P. in the Internet version)

The tuition fees for EES Online are currently 4450 euros and for IR Online 7650 euros per year.
