At a Glance

The Institute for Chinese Studies at Freie Universität Berlin is one of the largest academic centers for China research in Germany. The field of Sinology/Chinese Studies at Freie Universität Berlin is characterized by a social-scientific and interdisciplinary self-conception. The various aspects of China are researched in conjunction with methods and theories of the systematic disciplines. Teaching and research focus on the society of modern and contemporary China and the historical process of its formation. Special emphasis is placed on language education.

The study of Chinese Studies should enable students to analyze social contexts and historical processes on the basis of original language sources in a methodologically adequate, systematic and critical manner. Currently, there are about 400 students majoring in Chinese Studies.
