    La violencia tiene múltiples formatos, actores, orígenes y repercusiones. Se presenta de forma directa o indirecta y sus efectos pueden ser físicos o psicológicos. Puede ser considerada legítima o ilegítima dependiendo de quién la ejerza, y puede afectar a individuos pero también transformar irrevertiblemente modos de vida y sociedades enteras; tiene improntas distintas en las dinámicas urbanas y rurales. Por encima de esto, la intersección de variables como el género, la “raza”, la clase social y la sexualidad es clave a la hora de analizar cómo emergen y se reproducen las distinas formas de violencia. Por otro lado, las estrategias de adaptación, autoprotección y resistencia (tanto violenta como no-violenta) desarrolladas por las mismas personas afectadas por la violencia también varían dependiendo de los lugares en los que se encuentren, de las herramientas con las que cuenten y de sus condiciones individuales y colectivas. Este seminario aborda múltiples aristas de la violencia desde una perspectiva interseccional. El objectivo es preguntar cómo podemos, en tanto que investigadores, dar sentido a la violencia y la inseguridad imperantes en América Latina sin caer en la trampa de reproducir ni las categorías del Estado ni visiones sensacionalistas o estigmatizadoras de la violencia. Por ende, revisaremos diversas etnografías en contextos violentos en América Latina – desde escenarios de violencia comunitaria, sexual/de género, estatal, y criminal – para poder juntes pensar en cómo tratar estas dinámicas de forma ética, crítica y comprehensiva.

    This seminar will explore the political history of the Andean Republic, from Independence as Nueva Granada until the current failings to establish a Total Peace in Colombia. Readings will include the most seminal studies of the various periods in the country’s history. Particularly attention will be paid to consistent and persistent phenomena: constitutional democracy, civil conflict and violence, clientelistic structures and weak distribution of public goods. All of these phenomena are pertinent to Colombian politics, dating back, at least, to Independence.

    1945 fue un año en el que el mundo respiró con alivio, porque la Segunda Guerra Mundial había terminado. La destrucción reinaba en Europa y en muchas partes del mundo. Numeros*s intelectuales latinoamerican*s, entre ellos escritor*s, poetas, ensayistas y estudios*s de la cultura, ya habían comenzado a reflexionar durante la guerra o en los primeros años de la posguerra sobre cómo volver a anclar la cultura y la humanidad en el mundo. Eran conscientes de sus orígenes en la "periferia" (hoy diríamos el Sur Global) y se implicaron de manera creciente en el discurso universal humanista sobre la reconstrucción del mundo (p.ej., en la UNESCO). Los temas relevantes fueron, entre otros, la reflexión sobre el entendimiento internacional (también por medio de textos literarios y culturales), la cooperación internacional, la educación, los discursos sobre el humanismo, las asimetrías culturales. Todas estas iniciativas se basaron en una gran capacidad de observación de la situación del momento. En el curso se leerán y analizarán diferentes tipos de documentos (diarios de viaje, correspondencias, ensayos y poesía, así como textos programáticos) para indagar en aquel ambiente de reconstrucción cultural en el que participaron intelectuales latinoamerican*s (como Victoria Ocampo, Gabriela Mistral, Jaime Torres Bodet, Octavio Paz, Gilberto Freyre, Pablo Neruda, entre otr*s).

    Parafraseando a Jorge Luis Borges, la literatura fantástica nos contagia de irrealidad; sin embargo, lejos de buscar un escapismo basado en el miedo, sus narrativas exploran los límites de lo posible y subvierten los discursos hegemónicos que moldean nuestra sociedad. Así, lo fantástico logra abordar metafóricamente temáticas diversas y dar voz a lo innombrable. Este curso ofrece un análisis literario práctico de la evolución de la narrativa fantástica latinoamericana, desde sus orígenes góticos en el siglo XIX con autores como Rubén Darío (Nicaragua), Juana Manuela Gorriti (Argentina), Clemente Palma (Perú) y María Luisa Bombal (Chile), hasta obras representativas del neofantástico, incluyendo a Julio Cortázar (Argentina), Felisberto Hernández (Uruguay) y Amparo Dávila (México). También se explorarán las interpretaciones contemporáneas de autoras como Mariana Enríquez (Argentina), Mónica Ojeda (Ecuador), Liliana Colanzi (Bolivia) y Claudia Hernández (El Salvador), entre otrxs. A través de este recorrido, se examinará la constante reinvención de las expresiones de lo fantástico en la región, lo que permite a este género mantener su vigencia ante realidades sociales cambiantes y conservar su capacidad de inquietar, desafiar y cautivar.

    Las distopías crean mundos y sociedades alternativos que, a diferencia de las utopías, no se conciben como el mejor de los mundos posibles, sino como el más amenazador en el sentido de que ya se ha producido una catástrofe o ésta es inminente. Las catástrofes pueden tener causas muy diversas, ya sean conflictos bélicos, sistemas sociales o religiosos represivos, crisis económicas, nuevos avances tecnológicos y amenazas extraterrestres -como en la ciencia ficción- o desastres medioambientales. A menudo, sin embargo, el fin del mundo imaginado puede al menos retrasarse, ya que individuos o grupos se resisten a estos avances. En medio de este caos apocalíptico, las distopías no sólo responden a los temores del futuro, sino que también ofrecen un rayo de esperanza para un futuro potencial. Aunque las distopías de ficción siempre se han interpretado de forma más o menos clara en relación con el mundo real, esta distinción ha cambiado significativamente en las últimas décadas: Mucho de lo que hasta hace unas décadas parecía claramente imaginado ahora parece demasiado real, ya sean las guerras, la huida, la pobreza, el hambre, la inteligencia artificial o las consecuencias del cambio climático. Con este trasfondo, el curso aborda textos contemporáneos seleccionados de distopías y ciencia ficción de América Latina para analizar cómo se construyen estas narrativas, qué motivos utilizan, pero también qué alternativas ofrecen para mostrar posibilidades de acción. // As distopias criam mundos e sociedades alternativos que, ao contrário das utopias, não são concebidos como o melhor de todos os mundos possíveis, mas como o mais ameaçador, no sentido de que uma catástrofe já ocorreu ou é iminente. As catástrofes podem ter muitas causas diferentes, sejam elas conflitos bélicos, sistemas sociais ou religiosos repressivos, crises econômicas, novos desenvolvimentos técnicos e ameaças extraterrestres - como na ficção científica - ou desastres ambientais. No entanto, muitas vezes o fim do mundo imaginado pode ser pelo menos adiado, pois indivíduos ou grupos resistem a esses desenvolvimentos. Em meio a esse caos apocalíptico, as distopias não apenas respondem aos temores do futuro, mas também oferecem um vislumbre de esperança para um futuro em potencial. Embora as distopias ficcionais sempre tenham sido interpretadas de forma mais ou menos clara em relação ao mundo real, essa distinção mudou significativamente nas últimas décadas: muito do que até algumas décadas atrás parecia claramente imaginado agora parece real demais, sejam guerras, fugas, pobreza, fome, inteligência artificial ou as consequências da mudança climática. Nesse contexto, o curso examina alguns textos contemporâneos distópicos e de ficção científica da América Latina para analisar como essas narrativas são construídas, quais motivos elas usam, mas também quais alternativas elas oferecem para mostrar possibilidades de ação.

    Diese Lehrveranstaltung beleuchtet zentrale Ereignisse und Entwicklungen in Lateinamerika während des Kalten Krieges unter besonderer Beachtung lokaler Perspektiven. Vier Schlüsselthemen gliedern die Lehrveranstaltung: Ideologischer Wandel, Entwicklungshilfe und Solidaritätsbewegungen, Militärdiktaturen und Bürgerkriege sowie kultureller Anti-Imperialismus. Dabei wird konkret untersucht, wie lateinamerikanische Akteur*innen ihre Rolle in einem von Supermächten geprägten, globalen Kontext gestalteten. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt der Vielfalt von Perspektiven und der interdisziplinären Analyse von Primärquellen aus der Region. Die Studierenden erhalten die Möglichkeit, gemeinsam komplexe Wechselwirkungen zwischen Revolutionen, Repressionen und internationaler Solidarität zu analysieren und deren Bedeutung für die Geschichte Lateinamerikas im globalen Kalten Krieg zu erfassen.

    Este curso examina los acontecimientos y desarrollos clave en América Latina durante la Guerra Fría desde una perspectiva local. Se centra en cuatro temas clave: cambio ideológico, ayuda al desarrollo y movimientos de solidaridad, dictaduras militares y guerras civiles, y antiimperialismo cultural. Se examina cómo los actores latinoamericanos configuraron su papel en un contexto global caracterizado por superpotencias. Se presta especial atención a la diversidad de perspectivas y al análisis interdisciplinar de fuentes primarias de la región. Lxs estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de analizar las complejas interacciones entre revoluciones, represión y solidaridad internacional y de comprender su significado para la historia de América Latina durante la Guerra Fría global.

    Este curso examina os principais eventos e desenvolvimentos na América Latina durante a Guerra Fria por meio de uma perspectiva local. O foco está em quatro temas principais: mudança ideológica, ajuda ao desenvolvimento e movimentos de solidariedade, ditaduras militares e guerras civis e anti-imperialismo cultural. Ele examina como atores latino-americanes construíram seu papel em um contexto global caracterizado por superpotências.     The resurgence of nationalism in Latin American countries makes it necessary to carefully analyze its origins, stabilization, and transformations in the region. Our approach to this ideology, from a historical and interdisciplinary perspective, seeks to understand the internal mechanisms of its practices and discourses that allow it to adapt to different periods of the last two hundred years. The phenomenon of nationalism, as well as its relationship with the construction of the nation-state and the formation of national identities, allows us to formulate a set of questions focused on different levels of exploration: the global, the transnational, and the national. With such a broad view and based on classic and current literature on nationalism, students will be able to understand how the power of an idea manages to mobilize Latin Americans in history and present. / El resurgimiento del nacionalismo en los países de América Latina hace necesario analizar con detenimiento sus orígenes, estabilización y transformaciones en la región. Nuestro acercamiento a esta ideología, en perspectiva histórica e interdisciplinar, busca comprender cuáles son los mecanismos internos de sus prácticas y discursos que le permiten adaptarse en diferentes períodos de los últimos doscientos años. El fenómeno del nacionalismo, así como su relación con la construcción del Estado-Nación y la formación de las identidades nacionales, permite formular un conjunto de preguntas centradas en diferentes niveles de exploración: el global, el transnacional y el nacional. Con una mirada de esta amplitud y basándonos en literatura clásica y actual sobre el nacionalismo los estudiantes puedan comprender cómo el poder de una idea logra movilizar a los latinoamericanos en la historia y en el presente.

    En este curso revisaremos diversas herramientas que se han desarrollado desde la antropología y los feminismos para entender contextos diversos en América Latina. El objetivo principal del curso será explorar diversas metodologías y habilitar a lxs participantes en prácticas de investigación con una perspectiva interseccional y ética, que busque construir conocimiento y academia desde una posición crítica para entender las estructuras de poder, desigualdad y opresión que atraviesan los tejidos sociales latinoamericanos y que nos atraviesan, pero también para analizar las diversas luchas, cotidianidades y formas de construcción comunitaria que se desarrollan desde ámbitos muy diversos. A lo largo del curso lxs estudiantes deberán ser activxs en la búsqueda y presentación de nuevas metodologías y de diversas formas de presentación académica (en formatos múltiples).

    Die Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie bietet als multimethodische und sich dynamisch entwickelnde Disziplin einzigartige Werkzeuge, um transregionale Phänomene kritisch zu beleuchten. Insbesondere ethnographische Ansätze ermöglichen das Verständnis von gegenwärtigen Dynamiken zwischen dem Nahen Osten und Lateinamerika, die durch die historischen Kontinuitäten und Brüche kolonialer und orientalistisch geprägter Machtdiskurse geformt sind. Im Seminar wird ein Schwerpunkt auf dekoloniale und queer-feministische Perspektiven gelegt, um hegemoniale Sichtweisen zu hinterfragen und die Verwobenheit von Geschlecht, Ethnie, Religion und Macht in postkolonialen Kontexten zu erfassen. Diese Ansätze sollen dazu beitragen, neue, vielschichtige Narrative des Globalen Südens zu entwickeln, die das transnationale Erleben marginalisierter Gruppen sichtbar machen. Zentrale ethnologische Methoden wie Feldforschung, teilnehmende Beobachtung und qualitative Interviews, insbesondere die „multi-sited ethnography“, erlauben es, die Bewegungen von Menschen, Objekten und Ideen in ihrer Komplexität zu verfolgen. Ergänzend befasst sich das Seminar mit der kritischen Auswertung schriftlicher, oraler und audiovisueller Quellen, die gezielt durch die Linse dekolonialer und queer-feministischer Fragestellungen betrachtet werden.

    This seminar deals with corporeality and power from an anthropological, gender and decolonial perspective. How power is exercised over the body through discourses and practices and how people emancipate themselves through bodily practices are central questions that accompany us during the course. Bodies are not 'neutral' surfaces: power relations are inscribed in them. In given spaces and throughout socialization, people are marked by conceptions of their identity. Social markers such as gender, sexuality or age determine how people are seen or read by others. At the same time, we assume that bodily practices can have an emancipatory potential. Through bodily and performative practices marginalized people and groups can appropriate their bodies and conquer new spaces. The course analyzes examples of corporeality, physical practices and appropriations of space from feminist studies, migration studies, sport and ethnographic practices, works with texts and audio-visual materials and considers current debates.

    This course explores the multifaceted and interdependent nature of social inequalities. It goes beyond traditional metrics like the Gini coefficient to consider structural factors such as class, gender, race, migration and ecological conditions, among others. Participants will gain insights into the complexities of inequality in Latin America and beyond, the interaction between global and local structural forces and hierarchies, the strategies of resistance to these asymmetries, and how structural inequalities may persist despite recent compensatory policies.

    This seminar is a collection of public policy case studies from Latin America. These case studies will expose students to key theoretical and empirical aspects of public policy design, implementation, and evaluation. A wide variety of policies and sectors are covered: poverty, inequality, labor markets, education, health, (in)security, gender, environment, among others. Students will gain hands-on practice on quantitative and qualitative methods of policy analysis, and on how to communicate findings to policy-makers.

    Lateinamerika gilt gemeinhin zugleich als gewaltsamste und ungleichste Weltregion. Im Rahmen dieses Seminars beleuchten wir das Spannungsfeld Sicherheit und Entwicklung theoretisch und empirisch anhand von Fallstudien (von Mexiko über Zentralamerika und Karibik bis hin nach Südamerika). Ausgehend von den analytischen Erkenntnissen der kritischen Sicherheitsstudien sowie der kritischen Entwicklungsforschung, z. B.     El seminario tendrá dos ejes entrelazados: Uno de ellos ofrece una reconstrucción crítica de los debates académicos sobre decolonialidad, contextualizando sus supuestos teóricos y metodológicos desde una perspectiva de género (e.o. Quijano, Lugones, Mendoza, Curiel, Maldonado Torres, Walsh, Escobar). A través de éste se discutirán los aportes y los límites de la producción académica sobre construcciones decoloniales de pensamiento. El otro eje se abocará a la revisión del pensamiento decolonial en sus formas más prácticas y directas, construido por la gente que dedica su vida a las luchas por el territorio, por los derechos de los pueblos indígenas, por los recursos naturales y por la vida. La intención es poner en diálogo los discursos académicos con la construcción de conocimiento desde la práctica, discutiendo los alcances, los puntos de encuentro y las posibles contradicciones entre ambos y, a veces, entre ellos mismos. Parte fundamental del seminario será entender la forma en que el “giro decolonial” ha tomado distintos caminos y luchas, desde los activismos indígenas, negros, campesinos, queer y feministas -que incluyen líneas epistémicas y de prácticas locales e internacionales de solidaridad y en defensa de la centralidad de la vida- hasta las prácticas y debates desde la academia, todos motivados por las luchas actuales por la descolonización del pensamiento, del cuerpo, del género y del poder.

    The world is experiencing an escalation of armed conflicts, an increase in the production and sale of weapons, as well as the precariousness of the living conditions of the social majorities. In order to understand the complex articulations between militarization and the political economy of death, it is necessary to develop a global analytical perspective that takes into account how advanced capitalism is configured through contradictory and inter-scalar processes of “creative destruction” (Harvey, 2007). Latin America has been a scenario of violence and “necropolitics” (Mbembe, 2019) from imperial colonization to the right-wing dictatorships and counterinsurgency policies, promoted by the United States in the second half of the twentieth century. Moreover, the constant onslaught of national and transnational neoliberal actors has laid the foundations for projects that contribute to the impoverishment of the population and the increase of social inequalities. This course is conceived as a two-sided coin, as it contemplates violence and hope. On the one hand, we will discuss conceptual frameworks that help us explain the interconnections between local oligarchies, criminal groups linked to drug trafficking and globally dominant political and economic sectors. The cases of Colombia, Mexico, Brazil and Ecuador will serve us as empirical pivots to focus on the consequences of the alleged “war on drugs” and the relationship between structural racism and police/military violence. At the same time, we will use the local German case to illuminate not only the transregional and colonial bridges of militarization but also the function of the criminalization of social protest in a context of fascistization. The counterpart to the study of violence will be our “laboratory of hope”. In an interactive way and with dynamic formats, we will explore the projects of resistance set in motion by communities and popular movements. From there, we will analyze security and peace proposals that develop different solutions to the “iron fist” policy. The learning philosophy of our seminar is inspired by the methods of popular education (Freire, 1997), with the objective of producing critical thinking collectively.

    This seminar examines practices of policing and punishment from an abolitionist perspective. The seminar, first, provides a historical overview of abolitionist scholarship and activism from the anti-slavery movements to radical contemporary perspectives on state and society.     It is mostly political, economic, social or ecological crises that bring Latin America and the Caribbean into the news. The lecture will pick up on this and ask about the background to these current crises on very different topics, from the wave of new types of right-wing extremist politicians to the consequences of climate change, from striking social inequality to the conflicts surrounding the legacy of colonialism and slavery, from migration from and within the continent to the question of possible economic redistribution policies. Regular and active participation and reading of the preparatory texts for each session are expected.

    Im ersten Teil des Seminars werden feministischen Diagnosen über die gegenwärtigen Transformationen von Staatlichkeit, die im Zusammenhang einer Klima-, Wirtschaft-, und Demokratiekrise stehen, diskutiert. Schwerpunkte sind der radikale Abbau des Sozialstaates und von Rechtstaatlichkeit, die Defizite in den normativen Vorstellungen von nationalstaatliche Souveränität und Grenzregimen und der deregulierte Kampf um natürlichen Ressourcen und von unbezahlte Arbeit, die auch die Entstehung von neuen Kriegsökonomien fördert. Im zweiten Teil werden wir die Verbindung dieser Diagnosen mit der Genese und Entwicklung des globalen Rechtsrucks anhand der weltweite Politisierung der Gender-Debatten, rekonstruieren. Fallbeispiele aus Lateinamerika und Europa zeigen, wie sich bei der Stärkung des politischen und religiösen Fundamentalismus einen kulturellen Kampf um einen autoritären Geschlechter-und Gesellschaftsvertrag niederschlägt, die jenseits von populistischen Diskurse auch als Kampf um den Abbau bis Zerstörung von sozialen Rechte und politische Teilhabe verstanden werden kann. Welche Arten von Widerstand und welche Allianzen entlang eines breiten politischen Spektrums sich dabei erfolgreich bilden oder auch scheitern, wird ebenfalls ein Thema sein.

    This course delves into the impact and development of post-structuralist theory in Latin America, with a focus on how desire, discourse, and deconstruction have influenced contemporary sociological thought in the region. We will explore the intersections of these themes with social, political, and cultural contexts, examining how in particular Brazilian theorists have engaged with and expanded upon post-structuralist ideas. Brazil will be the key site of investigation, alongside Argentina and Chile. The course provides an introduction to post-structural thinking. No prior knowledge is required.

    Latin America has been associated for decades with the idea of revolution: the Mexican revolution, preceding the Russian revolution, opened the way to a series of revolutionary symbols, models of articulation and political horizons. Later, the Cold War and the intervention of the United States led to the formation of guerrillas in almost all the countries of the region. These armed groups, mostly of left-wing tendency, sought to achieve counter-hegemonic revolutions, however, only in the case of Cuba (1959) and Nicaragua (1979) did they succeed in taking power. On the other hand, the term “revolution” does not find a clear definition in Latin American political historiography: it has been used to refer to itself by processes as dissimilar as the Brazilian military dictatorship and the democratic and civilian socialist project of Chilean President Salvador Allende. In this seminar we will focus, on the one hand, on the transformations and continuities in the state apparatus and the political dimension of a society after the revolutionary triumph, using as case studies the historical examples of triumphant armed revolutions. On the other hand, we will critically and openly discuss the difference between revolution and state reform, based on the constituent process initiated in 1999 in Venezuela, which gave way to what is called the “fifth republic”, as well as referring to the Guatemalan Revolution of 1944 or the Bolivian Revolution of 1952.

    When we speak of “the right” it sometimes seems that we are referring to a monolith without faces. However, the accelerating events of recent times—from Bolsonaro’s mandate and Trump’s reelection to the triumph of Milei and the AfD—show that right-wing actors are heterogeneous and transform their strategies in a flexible manner. On the one hand, there are the movements, parties, think tanks, political figures and influencers who forge alliances and promote neoliberal, conservative and extreme projects. On the other hand, there are the people who vote, give likes, sympathize with certain ideas or start participating in organized right-wing spaces. The question that lies at the heart of this seminar is: Why has the right managed to be so successful? We will approach this complex topic through an interdisciplinary combination of theoretical discussion and empirical examination. Through the collective analysis of concrete cases from Latin America and the world, we will exercise our sociological imagination to understand and evaluate concepts such as the right and neoliberalism. We will also review disputes of meaning around the supposed “woke culture” and gender issues such as hegemonic masculinity or right-wing women. We will place particular emphasis on the Brazilian case of the last decade in order to understand, among others, how youth movements renewed strategies of interpellation through (digital) humor and “cool” political training. In methodological terms, we will learn to problematize the scales of analysis to develop intertwined lenses that overcome dichotomies between the local and the global. In addition, we will reflect on the methods and challenges to study the right, focusing on ethnographic approaches.

    Las distopías crean mundos y sociedades alternativos que, a diferencia de las utopías, no se conciben como el mejor de los mundos posibles, sino como el más amenazador en el sentido de que ya se ha producido una catástrofe o ésta es inminente. Las catástrofes pueden tener causas muy diversas, ya sean conflictos bélicos, sistemas sociales o religiosos represivos, crisis económicas, nuevos avances tecnológicos y amenazas extraterrestres -como en la ciencia ficción- o desastres medioambientales. A menudo, sin embargo, el fin del mundo imaginado puede al menos retrasarse, ya que individuos o grupos se resisten a estos avances. En medio de este caos apocalíptico, las distopías no sólo responden a los temores del futuro, sino que también ofrecen un rayo de esperanza para un futuro potencial. Aunque las distopías de ficción siempre se han interpretado de forma más o menos clara en relación con el mundo real, esta distinción ha cambiado significativamente en las últimas décadas: Mucho de lo que hasta hace unas décadas parecía claramente imaginado ahora parece demasiado real, ya sean las guerras, la huida, la pobreza, el hambre, la inteligencia artificial o las consecuencias del cambio climático. Con este trasfondo, el curso aborda textos contemporáneos seleccionados de distopías y ciencia ficción de América Latina para analizar cómo se construyen estas narrativas, qué motivos utilizan, pero también qué alternativas ofrecen para mostrar posibilidades de acción. // As distopias criam mundos e sociedades alternativos que, ao contrário das utopias, não são concebidos como o melhor de todos os mundos possíveis, mas como o mais ameaçador, no sentido de que uma catástrofe já ocorreu ou é iminente. As catástrofes podem ter muitas causas diferentes, sejam elas conflitos bélicos, sistemas sociais ou religiosos repressivos, crises econômicas, novos desenvolvimentos técnicos e ameaças extraterrestres - como na ficção científica - ou desastres ambientais. No entanto, muitas vezes o fim do mundo imaginado pode ser pelo menos adiado, pois indivíduos ou grupos resistem a esses desenvolvimentos. Em meio a esse caos apocalíptico, as distopias não apenas respondem aos temores do futuro, mas também oferecem um vislumbre de esperança para um futuro em potencial. Embora as distopias ficcionais sempre tenham sido interpretadas de forma mais ou menos clara em relação ao mundo real, essa distinção mudou significativamente nas últimas décadas: muito do que até algumas décadas atrás parecia claramente imaginado agora parece real demais, sejam guerras, fugas, pobreza, fome, inteligência artificial ou as consequências da mudança climática. Nesse contexto, o curso examina alguns textos contemporâneos distópicos e de ficção científica da América Latina para analisar como essas narrativas são construídas, quais motivos elas usam, mas também quais alternativas elas oferecem para mostrar possibilidades de ação.

    When we speak of “the right” it sometimes seems that we are referring to a monolith without faces. However, the accelerating events of recent times—from Bolsonaro’s mandate and Trump’s reelection to the triumph of Milei and the AfD—show that right-wing actors are heterogeneous and transform their strategies in a flexible manner. On the one hand, there are the movements, parties, think tanks, political figures and influencers who forge alliances and promote neoliberal, conservative and extreme projects. On the other hand, there are the people who vote, give likes, sympathize with certain ideas or start participating in organized right-wing spaces. The question that lies at the heart of this seminar is: Why has the right managed to be so successful? We will approach this complex topic through an interdisciplinary combination of theoretical discussion and empirical examination. Through the collective analysis of concrete cases from Latin America and the world, we will exercise our sociological imagination to understand and evaluate concepts such as the right and neoliberalism. We will also review disputes of meaning around the supposed “woke culture” and gender issues such as hegemonic masculinity or right-wing women. We will place particular emphasis on the Brazilian case of the last decade in order to understand, among others, how youth movements renewed strategies of interpellation through (digital) humor and “cool” political training. In methodological terms, we will learn to problematize the scales of analysis to develop intertwined lenses that overcome dichotomies between the local and the global. In addition, we will reflect on the methods and challenges to study the right, focusing on ethnographic approaches.

    En este curso revisaremos diversas herramientas que se han desarrollado desde la antropología y los feminismos para entender contextos diversos en América Latina.     El seminario tendrá dos ejes entrelazados: Uno de ellos ofrece una reconstrucción crítica de los debates académicos sobre decolonialidad, contextualizando sus supuestos teóricos y metodológicos desde una perspectiva de género (e.o. Quijano, Lugones, Mendoza, Curiel, Maldonado Torres, Walsh, Escobar). A través de éste se discutirán los aportes y los límites de la producción académica sobre construcciones decoloniales de pensamiento. El otro eje se abocará a la revisión del pensamiento decolonial en sus formas más prácticas y directas, construido por la gente que dedica su vida a las luchas por el territorio, por los derechos de los pueblos indígenas, por los recursos naturales y por la vida. La intención es poner en diálogo los discursos académicos con la construcción de conocimiento desde la práctica, discutiendo los alcances, los puntos de encuentro y las posibles contradicciones entre ambos y, a veces, entre ellos mismos. Parte fundamental del seminario será entender la forma en que el “giro decolonial” ha tomado distintos caminos y luchas, desde los activismos indígenas, negros, campesinos, queer y feministas -que incluyen líneas epistémicas y de prácticas locales e internacionales de solidaridad y en defensa de la centralidad de la vida- hasta las prácticas y debates desde la academia, todos motivados por las luchas actuales por la descolonización del pensamiento, del cuerpo, del género y del poder.

    Im ersten Teil des Seminars werden feministischen Diagnosen über die gegenwärtigen Transformationen von Staatlichkeit, die im Zusammenhang einer Klima-, Wirtschaft-, und Demokratiekrise stehen, diskutiert. Schwerpunkte sind der radikale Abbau des Sozialstaates und von Rechtstaatlichkeit, die Defizite in den normativen Vorstellungen von nationalstaatliche Souveränität und Grenzregimen und der deregulierte Kampf um natürlichen Ressourcen und von unbezahlte Arbeit, die auch die Entstehung von neuen Kriegsökonomien fördert. Im zweiten Teil werden wir die Verbindung dieser Diagnosen mit der Genese und Entwicklung des globalen Rechtsrucks anhand der weltweite Politisierung der Gender-Debatten, rekonstruieren. Fallbeispiele aus Lateinamerika und Europa zeigen, wie sich bei der Stärkung des politischen und religiösen Fundamentalismus einen kulturellen Kampf um einen autoritären Geschlechter-und Gesellschaftsvertrag niederschlägt, die jenseits von populistischen Diskurse auch als Kampf um den Abbau bis Zerstörung von sozialen Rechte und politische Teilhabe verstanden werden kann. Welche Arten von Widerstand und welche Allianzen entlang eines breiten politischen Spektrums sich dabei erfolgreich bilden oder auch scheitern, wird ebenfalls ein Thema sein.

    Tras años de liberalización en el curso de la «revolución sexual» desde finales de la década de 1960, la aparición del VIH, hasta entonces no descubierto, puso un abrupto fin a las promesas: en 1981, se hicieron los primeros informes de una nueva enfermedad en los EE.UU., que se propagó principalmente entre hombres homosexuales jóvenes y previamente sanos. En las décadas siguientes, este virus y la enfermedad del sida que provocó dejarían profundas heridas en las sociedades latinoamericanas, siendo especialmente afectadas las personas de la ‘disidencias sexuales’ ya de por sí marginadas en cuanto a sexo, género y sexualidad: gays, bisexuales, lesbianas, travestis, trans*, trabajadoras sexuales, etc. En este curso se examinarán las consecuencias de la pandemia del VIH y el SIDA a partir de textos teóricos y obras artísticas seleccionadas, con el fin de comprender qué impacto tuvo en la vida y los amores de los individuos y grupos afectados, qué cambios desencadenó la pandemia en términos de percepciones sexuales y de género, pero también qué estrategias se desarrollaron para hacer frente a la enfermedad con el fin de contrarrestar la estigmatización social y la exclusión y de superar los conflictos internos. Además, el curso echa un vistazo al impacto socio-cultural de una pandemia experimentada por el mundo muy recientemente – del Covid. La aparición y la difusión rápida de la enfermedad contagiosa en 2020 no solamente causó un choque y muchas ansiedades, pero – a través de la implementación de políticas y medidas de la salud pública por la mayoría de los Estados – transformó en poco tiempo profundamente la vida cotidiana de las personas, entre otros al nivel de las prácticas sociales y físicas y del uso de los espacios. Las consecuencias de la pandemia para la vida y los cuerpos, particularmente de grupos generalmente más vulnerables o marginalizados en las sociedades, como los jóvenes, las mujeres o migrantes, y sus estrategias para enfrentar la situación se analizarán.

    El curso propone abordar procesos creativos y no-creativos de escritura con un enfoque de la literatura y la poesía transmedial. Un objetivo será facilitar y habilitar a cada participante herramientas teóricas y prácticas para poder crear textos/obras/conceptos/formas narrativas con la mayor amplitud posible mediante materiales de referencia y ejercicios. Quedan excluidos del programa tratamientos de corrección de estilo o exámenes estéticos. En diferentes etapas del curso se ofrecerá una aproximación a escritoras*es, colectivos artísticos y obras que servirán como distintivos o indicios para interpretar tipos de literaturas divergentes e incatalogables, especialmente de Latinoamérica.     Im Anschluss an den Kurs Quechua I werden im Quechua II Grundstrukturen der modernen gesprochenen Sprache im Zusammenhang mit der Lebenswelt und der Welterfahrung der indigenen Bevölkerung weiter behandelt und für den Erwerb weiterer Kenntnisse zu indigenen Sprachen ermöglicht. Koloniale Texte, moderne Lieder und Texte sowie Erzählgut bilden die Arbeitsgrundlage. Die vielfältigen Ausdrucksweisen des Quechuas werden sichtbar gemacht und ihre Bedeutung für eine praxisorientierte Sichtweise, beispielsweise in der interkulturellen zweisprachigen Erziehung und Entwicklungsprojekte, dargelegt. Mündliche Überlieferung als Enkulturationsinstrument sowie die Problematik der Verschriftung oraler Sprachen werden thematisiert. In diesem Zusammenhang wird die interkulturelle Kommunikationskompetenz in den Vordergrund gestellt. Für weitere Forschungs- und Anwendungsperspektiven zu indigenen Sprachen Amerikas werden die eben zweisemestrigen Kursen empfohlen.

    Das Sprachlabor zum yukatekischen Maya ist eine gute Möglichkeit zu Hause mit virtuellen Muttersprachler*innen die Sprache zu üben. Es werden zu den Sprachlaborlektionen Fragen gestellt, um das Niveau des Verständnisses nachzuvollziehen. Der Link zum Sprachlabor steht auf Blackboard zur Verfügung. Mithilfe von Medien (Video- und Audiodateien) wird das Hörverständnis geschult. In der Lehrveranstaltung werden mit den Studierenden Skypekonferenzen ausprobiert, damit die Studierenden konkrete Fragen sofort stellen können. Jetzt im zweiten Semester werden verschiedene Kompetenzen der Studierenden geschult. Mit einem zweisprachigen Hörspiel (Maya – Spanisch) mit historischem Inhalt und dem Hören eines Radiosenders, der auf yukatekischem Maya sendet, wird die auditive Kompetenz geschult. Hörspiel und Radiosender werden inhaltlich eingeordnet. Die Kompetenz der Lektüre wird durch ausgewählte einfache Texte vertieft, die Kompetenz der Übersetzung wird mit einfachen aktuellen Zeitungsartikeln geübt.

    The resurgence of nationalism in Latin American countries makes it necessary to carefully analyze its origins, stabilization, and transformations in the region. Our approach to this ideology, from a historical and interdisciplinary perspective, seeks to understand the internal mechanisms of its practices and discourses that allow it to adapt to different periods of the last two hundred years. The phenomenon of nationalism, as well as its relationship with the construction of the nation-state and the formation of national identities, allows us to formulate a set of questions focused on different levels of exploration: the global, the transnational, and the national. With such a broad view and based on classic and current literature on nationalism, students will be able to understand how the power of an idea manages to mobilize Latin Americans in history and present. / El resurgimiento del nacionalismo en los países de América Latina hace necesario analizar con detenimiento sus orígenes, estabilización y transformaciones en la región. Nuestro acercamiento a esta ideología, en perspectiva histórica e interdisciplinar, busca comprender cuáles son los mecanismos internos de sus prácticas y discursos que le permiten adaptarse en diferentes períodos de los últimos doscientos años. El fenómeno del nacionalismo, así como su relación con la construcción del Estado-Nación y la formación de las identidades nacionales, permite formular un conjunto de preguntas centradas en diferentes niveles de exploración: el global, el transnacional y el nacional. Con una mirada de esta amplitud y basándonos en literatura clásica y actual sobre el nacionalismo los estudiantes puedan comprender cómo el poder de una idea logra movilizar a los latinoamericanos en la historia y en el presente.

    This lecture course is an introduction to current terms of global political sociology. Specifically, we will address the effects of inequality on various political systems in the Global South with a focus on Latin America. Beginning with an elaboration of how dependence was historically structured in the Southern Cone, the course will explore how inequality structured the state, political and economic inequities were reflected in citizenship regimes, as well as how economic and political institutions interact with various types of regimes. The course will explore how the political sociology, often but not always with origin in the “Old World”, has taken on sui generis meaning in Latin America, and therefore also made sui generis contributions. The terminology will be explored in detail with examples from Latin America and beyond and the design of the course combines theoretical as well as empirical examination. Some of the key terms and trajectories that will be explored: democracy vs. authoritarianism, oligarchic rule vs. populist rule, elitism vs. popular politics, modernization and post-modern citizenship.

    Wissenschaftliches Schreiben ist erlernbar. Es geht nicht um Talent oder Können und Nicht-Können. Gutes wissenschaftliches Schreiben kann und muss man lernen. In dieser Übung widmen wir uns in zwölf Einheiten den Anforderungen, Elementen und Techniken des wissenschaftlichen Schreibens. Masterstudierende des Lateinamerika-Instituts lernen die folgenden Bereiche anhand zahlreicher Beispiele in der Theorie und der Praxis intensiv kennen: Organisation wissenschaftlicher Schreibprojekte; Umgang mit Lektüren; Themenfindung und -eingrenzung; Schreiben und Argumentation; Sprache, Ausdruck und Formulierungen; Unterstützung durch KI im Schreibprozess; Anti-Vorbilder und Vorbilder; Textarbeit und Schreibtechniken sowie Überarbeitung und Feinschliff. Die Lehrveranstaltung setzt sich aus Inputs, Diskussionen, Übungen, Gruppenberatungen sowie Einzelarbeiten inkl. Vor- und Nachbereitung zusammen. Es kommen PPT-Präsentationen, deutsch-, spanisch- und portugiesischsprachige Arbeitsblätter, wissenschaftliche Publikationen, Wiki-Einträge und Podcasts zum Einsatz. Alle Masterstudierenden des Instituts sind unabhängig von ihrem Fachsemester und ihrer Erstsprache/ Muttersprache in dieser Lehrveranstaltung willkommen. Im Verlauf der Übung wird die Gelegenheit geboten, Herausforderungen und Fortschritte im Schreibprozess individuell zu thematisieren.     1945 fue un año en el que el mundo respiró con alivio, porque la Segunda Guerra Mundial había terminado. La destrucción reinaba en Europa y en muchas partes del mundo. Numeros*s intelectuales latinoamerican*s, entre ellos escritor*s, poetas, ensayistas y estudios*s de la cultura, ya habían comenzado a reflexionar durante la guerra o en los primeros años de la posguerra sobre cómo volver a anclar la cultura y la humanidad en el mundo. Eran conscientes de sus orígenes en la "periferia" (hoy diríamos el Sur Global) y se implicaron de manera creciente en el discurso universal humanista sobre la reconstrucción del mundo (p.ej., en la UNESCO). Los temas relevantes fueron, entre otros, la reflexión sobre el entendimiento internacional (también por medio de textos literarios y culturales), la cooperación internacional, la educación, los discursos sobre el humanismo, las asimetrías culturales. Todas estas iniciativas se basaron en una gran capacidad de observación de la situación del momento. En el curso se leerán y analizarán diferentes tipos de documentos (diarios de viaje, correspondencias, ensayos y poesía, así como textos programáticos) para indagar en aquel ambiente de reconstrucción cultural en el que participaron intelectuales latinoamerican*s (como Victoria Ocampo, Gabriela Mistral, Jaime Torres Bodet, Octavio Paz, Gilberto Freyre, Pablo Neruda, entre otr*s).

Así, lo fantástico logra abordar metafóricamente temáticas diversas y dar voz a lo innombrable. Este curso ofrece un análisis literario práctico de la evolución de la narrativa fantástica latinoamericana, desde sus orígenes góticos en el siglo XIX con autores como Rubén Darío (Nicaragua), Juana Manuela Gorriti (Argentina), Clemente Palma (Perú) y María Luisa Bombal (Chile), hasta obras representativas del neofantástico, incluyendo a Julio Cortázar (Argentina), Felisberto Hernández (Uruguay) y Amparo Dávila (México). También se explorarán las interpretaciones contemporáneas de autoras como Mariana Enríquez (Argentina), Mónica Ojeda (Ecuador), Liliana Colanzi (Bolivia) y Claudia Hernández (El Salvador), entre otrxs.     Las distopías crean mundos y sociedades alternativos que, a diferencia de las utopías, no se conciben como el mejor de los mundos posibles, sino como el más amenazador en el sentido de que ya se ha producido una catástrofe o ésta es inminente. Las catástrofes pueden tener causas muy diversas, ya sean conflictos bélicos, sistemas sociales o religiosos represivos, crisis económicas, nuevos avances tecnológicos y amenazas extraterrestres -como en la ciencia ficción- o desastres medioambientales. A menudo, sin embargo, el fin del mundo imaginado puede al menos retrasarse, ya que individuos o grupos se resisten a estos avances. En medio de este caos apocalíptico, las distopías no sólo responden a los temores del futuro, sino que también ofrecen un rayo de esperanza para un futuro potencial. Aunque las distopías de ficción siempre se han interpretado de forma más o menos clara en relación con el mundo real, esta distinción ha cambiado significativamente en las últimas décadas: Mucho de lo que hasta hace unas décadas parecía claramente imaginado ahora parece demasiado real, ya sean las guerras, la huida, la pobreza, el hambre, la inteligencia artificial o las consecuencias del cambio climático. Con este trasfondo, el curso aborda textos contemporáneos seleccionados de distopías y ciencia ficción de América Latina para analizar cómo se construyen estas narrativas, qué motivos utilizan, pero también qué alternativas ofrecen para mostrar posibilidades de acción. // As distopias criam mundos e sociedades alternativos que, ao contrário das utopias, não são concebidos como o melhor de todos os mundos possíveis, mas como o mais ameaçador, no sentido de que uma catástrofe já ocorreu ou é iminente. As catástrofes podem ter muitas causas diferentes, sejam elas conflitos bélicos, sistemas sociais ou religiosos repressivos, crises econômicas, novos desenvolvimentos técnicos e ameaças extraterrestres - como na ficção científica - ou desastres ambientais. No entanto, muitas vezes o fim do mundo imaginado pode ser pelo menos adiado, pois indivíduos ou grupos resistem a esses desenvolvimentos. Em meio a esse caos apocalíptico, as distopias não apenas respondem aos temores do futuro, mas também oferecem um vislumbre de esperança para um futuro em potencial.     Diese Lehrveranstaltung beleuchtet zentrale Ereignisse und Entwicklungen in Lateinamerika während des Kalten Krieges unter besonderer Beachtung lokaler Perspektiven. Vier Schlüsselthemen gliedern die Lehrveranstaltung: Ideologischer Wandel, Entwicklungshilfe und Solidaritätsbewegungen, Militärdiktaturen und Bürgerkriege sowie kultureller Anti-Imperialismus. Dabei wird konkret untersucht, wie lateinamerikanische Akteur*innen ihre Rolle in einem von Supermächten geprägten, globalen Kontext gestalteten. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt der Vielfalt von Perspektiven und der interdisziplinären Analyse von Primärquellen aus der Region. Se centra en cuatro temas clave: cambio ideológico, ayuda al desarrollo y movimientos de solidaridad, dictaduras militares y guerras civiles, y antiimperialismo cultural. Se examina cómo los actores latinoamericanos configuraron su papel en un contexto global caracterizado por superpotencias. Se presta especial atención a la diversidad de perspectivas y al análisis interdisciplinar de fuentes primarias de la región. Lxs estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de analizar las complejas interacciones entre revoluciones, represión y solidaridad internacional y de comprender su significado para la historia de América Latina durante la Guerra Fría global.

    En este curso revisaremos diversas herramientas que se han desarrollado desde la antropología y los feminismos para entender contextos diversos en América Latina. El objetivo principal del curso será explorar diversas metodologías y habilitar a lxs participantes en prácticas de investigación con una perspectiva interseccional y ética, que busque construir conocimiento y academia desde una posición crítica para entender las estructuras de poder, desigualdad y opresión que atraviesan los tejidos sociales latinoamericanos y que nos atraviesan, pero también para analizar las diversas luchas, cotidianidades y formas de construcción comunitaria que se desarrollan desde ámbitos muy diversos.     Die Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie bietet als multimethodische und sich dynamisch entwickelnde Disziplin einzigartige Werkzeuge, um transregionale Phänomene kritisch zu beleuchten. Insbesondere ethnographische Ansätze ermöglichen das Verständnis von gegenwärtigen Dynamiken zwischen dem Nahen Osten und Lateinamerika, die durch die historischen Kontinuitäten und Brüche kolonialer und orientalistisch geprägter Machtdiskurse geformt sind. Im Seminar wird ein Schwerpunkt auf dekoloniale und queer-feministische Perspektiven gelegt, um hegemoniale Sichtweisen zu hinterfragen und die Verwobenheit von Geschlecht, Ethnie, Religion und Macht in postkolonialen Kontexten zu erfassen. Diese Ansätze sollen dazu beitragen, neue, vielschichtige Narrative des Globalen Südens zu entwickeln, die das transnationale Erleben marginalisierter Gruppen sichtbar machen. Zentrale ethnologische Methoden wie Feldforschung, teilnehmende Beobachtung und qualitative Interviews, insbesondere die „multi-sited ethnography“, erlauben es, die Bewegungen von Menschen, Objekten und Ideen in ihrer Komplexität zu verfolgen. Ergänzend befasst sich das Seminar mit der kritischen Auswertung schriftlicher, oraler und audiovisueller Quellen, die gezielt durch die Linse dekolonialer und queer-feministischer Fragestellungen betrachtet werden.

    This seminar deals with corporeality and power from an anthropological, gender and decolonial perspective. How power is exercised over the body through discourses and practices and how people emancipate themselves through bodily practices are central questions that accompany us during the course. Bodies are not 'neutral' surfaces: power relations are inscribed in them. In given spaces and throughout socialization, people are marked by conceptions of their identity. Social markers such as gender, sexuality or age determine how people are seen or read by others. At the same time, we assume that bodily practices can have an emancipatory potential. Through bodily and performative practices marginalized people and groups can appropriate their bodies and conquer new spaces. The course analyzes examples of corporeality, physical practices and appropriations of space from feminist studies, migration studies, sport and ethnographic practices, works with texts and audio-visual materials and considers current debates.

    El seminario tendrá dos ejes entrelazados: Uno de ellos ofrece una reconstrucción crítica de los debates académicos sobre decolonialidad, contextualizando sus supuestos teóricos y metodológicos desde una perspectiva de género (e.o. Quijano, Lugones, Mendoza, Curiel, Maldonado Torres, Walsh, Escobar). A través de éste se discutirán los aportes y los límites de la producción académica sobre construcciones decoloniales de pensamiento. El otro eje se abocará a la revisión del pensamiento decolonial en sus formas más prácticas y directas, construido por la gente que dedica su vida a las luchas por el territorio, por los derechos de los pueblos indígenas, por los recursos naturales y por la vida. La intención es poner en diálogo los discursos académicos con la construcción de conocimiento desde la práctica, discutiendo los alcances, los puntos de encuentro y las posibles contradicciones entre ambos y, a veces, entre ellos mismos.     The world is experiencing an escalation of armed conflicts, an increase in the production and sale of weapons, as well as the precariousness of the living conditions of the social majorities. In order to understand the complex articulations between militarization and the political economy of death, it is necessary to develop a global analytical perspective that takes into account how advanced capitalism is configured through contradictory and inter-scalar processes of “creative destruction” (Harvey, 2007). Latin America has been a scenario of violence and “necropolitics” (Mbembe, 2019) from imperial colonization to the right-wing dictatorships and counterinsurgency policies, promoted by the United States in the second half of the twentieth century. Moreover, the constant onslaught of national and transnational neoliberal actors has laid the foundations for projects that contribute to the impoverishment of the population and the increase of social inequalities. This course is conceived as a two-sided coin, as it contemplates violence and hope. On the one hand, we will discuss conceptual frameworks that help us explain the interconnections between local oligarchies, criminal groups linked to drug trafficking and globally dominant political and economic sectors. The cases of Colombia, Mexico, Brazil and Ecuador will serve us as empirical pivots to focus on the consequences of the alleged “war on drugs” and the relationship between structural racism and police/military violence. At the same time, we will use the local German case to illuminate not only the transregional and colonial bridges of militarization but also the function of the criminalization of social protest in a context of fascistization. The counterpart to the study of violence will be our “laboratory of hope”. In an interactive way and with dynamic formats, we will explore the projects of resistance set in motion by communities and popular movements. From there, we will analyze security and peace proposals that develop different solutions to the “iron fist” policy. The learning philosophy of our seminar is inspired by the methods of popular education (Freire, 1997), with the objective of producing critical thinking collectively.

    It is mostly political, economic, social or ecological crises that bring Latin America and the Caribbean into the news. The lecture will pick up on this and ask about the background to these current crises on very different topics, from the wave of new types of right-wing extremist politicians to the consequences of climate change, from striking social inequality to the conflicts surrounding the legacy of colonialism and slavery, from migration from and within the continent to the question of possible economic redistribution policies.     Im ersten Teil des Seminars werden feministischen Diagnosen über die gegenwärtigen Transformationen von Staatlichkeit, die im Zusammenhang einer Klima-, Wirtschaft-, und Demokratiekrise stehen, diskutiert. Schwerpunkte sind der radikale Abbau des Sozialstaates und von Rechtstaatlichkeit, die Defizite in den normativen Vorstellungen von nationalstaatliche Souveränität und Grenzregimen und der deregulierte Kampf um natürlichen Ressourcen und von unbezahlte Arbeit, die auch die Entstehung von neuen Kriegsökonomien fördert. Im zweiten Teil werden wir die Verbindung dieser Diagnosen mit der Genese und Entwicklung des globalen Rechtsrucks anhand der weltweite Politisierung der Gender-Debatten, rekonstruieren. Fallbeispiele aus Lateinamerika und Europa zeigen, wie sich bei der Stärkung des politischen und religiösen Fundamentalismus einen kulturellen Kampf um einen autoritären Geschlechter-und Gesellschaftsvertrag niederschlägt, die jenseits von populistischen Diskurse auch als Kampf um den Abbau bis Zerstörung von sozialen Rechte und politische Teilhabe verstanden werden kann. Welche Arten von Widerstand und welche Allianzen entlang eines breiten politischen Spektrums sich dabei erfolgreich bilden oder auch scheitern, wird ebenfalls ein Thema sein.

    This course delves into the impact and development of post-structuralist theory in Latin America, with a focus on how desire, discourse, and deconstruction have influenced contemporary sociological thought in the region. We will explore the intersections of these themes with social, political, and cultural contexts, examining how in particular Brazilian theorists have engaged with and expanded upon post-structuralist ideas.     Latin America has been associated for decades with the idea of revolution: the Mexican revolution, preceding the Russian revolution, opened the way to a series of revolutionary symbols, models of articulation and political horizons. Later, the Cold War and the intervention of the United States led to the formation of guerrillas in almost all the countries of the region. These armed groups, mostly of left-wing tendency, sought to achieve counter-hegemonic revolutions, however, only in the case of Cuba (1959) and Nicaragua (1979) did they succeed in taking power. On the other hand, the term “revolution” does not find a clear definition in Latin American political historiography: it has been used to refer to itself by processes as dissimilar as the Brazilian military dictatorship and the democratic and civilian socialist project of Chilean President Salvador Allende. In this seminar we will focus, on the one hand, on the transformations and continuities in the state apparatus and the political dimension of a society after the revolutionary triumph, using as case studies the historical examples of triumphant armed revolutions. On the other hand, we will critically and openly discuss the difference between revolution and state reform, based on the constituent process initiated in 1999 in Venezuela, which gave way to what is called the “fifth republic”, as well as referring to the Guatemalan Revolution of 1944 or the Bolivian Revolution of 1952.

    When we speak of “the right” it sometimes seems that we are referring to a monolith without faces. However, the accelerating events of recent times—from Bolsonaro’s mandate and Trump’s reelection to the triumph of Milei and the AfD—show that right-wing actors are heterogeneous and transform their strategies in a flexible manner. On the one hand, there are the movements, parties, think tanks, political figures and influencers who forge alliances and promote neoliberal, conservative and extreme projects. On the other hand, there are the people who vote, give likes, sympathize with certain ideas or start participating in organized right-wing spaces. The question that lies at the heart of this seminar is: Why has the right managed to be so successful? We will approach this complex topic through an interdisciplinary combination of theoretical discussion and empirical examination. Through the collective analysis of concrete cases from Latin America and the world, we will exercise our sociological imagination to understand and evaluate concepts such as the right and neoliberalism. We will also review disputes of meaning around the supposed “woke culture” and gender issues such as hegemonic masculinity or right-wing women. We will place particular emphasis on the Brazilian case of the last decade in order to understand, among others, how youth movements renewed strategies of interpellation through (digital) humor and “cool” political training. In methodological terms, we will learn to problematize the scales of analysis to develop intertwined lenses that overcome dichotomies between the local and the global. In addition, we will reflect on the methods and challenges to study the right, focusing on ethnographic approaches.

    A partir de una perspectiva interdisciplinaria y expandida del fenómeno literario en diálogo con otras artes y con los estudios de género, el seminario propone el encuentro con y la discusión de la obra de la escritora y pensadora mexicano-estadunidense Gloria Anzaldúa en el contexto del giro ontológico, así como de ideas que han anticipado la deconstrucción. De esta forma, la selección de textos del seminario está orientada a reconstruir los aportes críticos de Anzaldúa a las epistemologías del sur.

    Tras años de liberalización en el curso de la «revolución sexual» desde finales de la década de 1960, la aparición del VIH, hasta entonces no descubierto, puso un abrupto fin a las promesas: en 1981, se hicieron los primeros informes de una nueva enfermedad en los EE.UU., que se propagó principalmente entre hombres homosexuales jóvenes y previamente sanos. En las décadas siguientes, este virus y la enfermedad del sida que provocó dejarían profundas heridas en las sociedades latinoamericanas, siendo especialmente afectadas las personas de la ‘disidencias sexuales’ ya de por sí marginadas en cuanto a sexo, género y sexualidad: gays, bisexuales, lesbianas, travestis, trans*, trabajadoras sexuales, etc. En este curso se examinarán las consecuencias de la pandemia del VIH y el SIDA a partir de textos teóricos y obras artísticas seleccionadas, con el fin de comprender qué impacto tuvo en la vida y los amores de los individuos y grupos afectados, qué cambios desencadenó la pandemia en términos de percepciones sexuales y de género, pero también qué estrategias se desarrollaron para hacer frente a la enfermedad con el fin de contrarrestar la estigmatización social y la exclusión y de superar los conflictos internos. Además, el curso echa un vistazo al impacto socio-cultural de una pandemia experimentada por el mundo muy recientemente – del Covid. La aparición y la difusión rápida de la enfermedad contagiosa en 2020 no solamente causó un choque y muchas ansiedades, pero – a través de la implementación de políticas y medidas de la salud pública por la mayoría de los Estados – transformó en poco tiempo profundamente la vida cotidiana de las personas, entre otros al nivel de las prácticas sociales y físicas y del uso de los espacios. Las consecuencias de la pandemia para la vida y los cuerpos, particularmente de grupos generalmente más vulnerables o marginalizados en las sociedades, como los jóvenes, las mujeres o migrantes, y sus estrategias para enfrentar la situación se analizarán.

    Fällt die Wahl auf ein Praktikum im Bereich Forschungspraxis, so ist eine Praktikumsstelle im In- oder Ausland in dafür geeigneten Tätigkeitsfeldern zu wählen. Das Zentralinstitut Lateinamerika-Institut berät bei der Suche nach potenziellen Praktikumsinstitutionen (vgl. auch Informationsangebote auf Homepage und Blog sowie Alumni-Aktivitäten). Es werden insbesondere Praktika in den Forschungsprojekten des Zentralinstituts Lateinamerika-Institut empfohlen. Der Bezug des Praktikums zum in der Abschlussphase geplanten Vorhaben und damit zum Studium ist im Vorfeld darzulegen und mit der Betreuungsperson der Masterarbeit abzusprechen. Das Vorhaben, die Eignung und der Zeitrahmen (Daten und Umfang) werden im Vorfeld schriftlich festgehalten (Einreichung des Beratungsprotokolls). Eine Aufteilung des Praktikums in zwei Abschnitte ist möglich. Gleichermaßen möglich ist die Absolvierung des Praktikums in Teilzeit. Die Durchführung des Praktikums in der vorlesungs­freien Zeit wird dringend empfohlen. Neben den zentralen Erkenntnissen werden die Kompetenzentwicklung und die Ver­tiefung von Theorien- und Methodenkenntnissen sowie der regional­wissenschaftlichen Expertise im Hinblick auf das in der Abschluss­phase geplante Projekt in einem Abschlussbericht dokumentiert. Für das abgeleistete Praktikum wird von der Praktikumsstelle ein Nachweis unter Angabe des Stundenumfangs ausgestellt. Es ist ein fünfseitiger Praktikumsbericht einzureichen. Teil des Praktikums­moduls ist zudem eine auf den Studiengang zugeschnittene, in der Regel einmal im Jahr statt­findende Veran­staltung zu Berufsperspektiven mit Gästen/ Alumni, die auch allen weiteren Studierenden des Zentralinstituts Lateinamerika-Institut offensteht.     Fällt die Wahl auf ein Feldprojekt im Bereich Forschungspraxis, so kann dieses im In- oder Ausland sowohl in Präsenz als auch online, das heißt auf Distanz mit der entsprechenden technischen Unterstützung, durchgeführt werden. Die Fähigkeit zum wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten wird durch die selbstständige Entwicklung und Durch­führung von einem forschungs­orientierten Studienprojekt, das von der Betreuungsperson der Masterarbeit begleitet wird, erweitert (unter anderem Recherchen in Archiven, quantitative Forschungen etwa im Rahmen von Befragungen oder Interviews, teil­nehmende Beobachtungen). Vorhaben, Inhalte, Ziele und Zeitrahmen (Daten und Umfang) werden im Vorfeld definiert und schriftlich festgehalten (Einreichung des Beratungsprotokolls und des Formulars zum Feldprojekt unter Beachtung der Checkliste). Die Kommunikation mit der Betreuungsperson wird während des gesamten Feldprojekts weiter­geführt. Zwischen- und Endergebnisse werden vorgestellt und besprochen. Neben den zentralen Erkenntnissen werden die Kompetenz­entwicklung und die Ver­tiefung von Theorien- und Methodenkenntnissen sowie der regionalwissenschaftlichen Expertise im Hinblick auf das forschungsorientierte Studienprojekt in einem Abschlussbericht dokumentiert.
