In the excercise the students learn methods for screening of microorganisms for bioactive compounds, classifying microorganisms (such as Gram staining, biochemical tests, and 16S rRNA sequencing), bacterial cultivation, DNA cloning and electrophoretic techniques for DNA and protein analysis. Students also learn to overexpress, purify and characterize recombinant proteins, and to evaluate antimicrobial activities of bacterial extracts against other microorganisms using agar diffusion and MIC assays.
