    Contents Lecture and Seminar “Evolution of reef ecosystems”

    Structure:
    Reefs: Structure, ecology, types, reef zonation and distribution: tropical and cold water.

    Past reefs: Reef evolution, controlling factors in Earth's history. 
    Reefs as archives of past climate and environmental change.

    Present-day reefs: Benefits, threats: anthropogenic influence, global climate change, coral bleaching.

    Reefs of the future: reef protection/management (individual, regional, global), scenarios

    Possibly visit to the Berlin Zoo aquarium (or optional in Stralsund: Meeresmuseum, Ozeaneum)

    Seminar:
    Develop and present short presentations on a topic of your choice
    Watch documentary movies at home and discuss their contents in online class

    Bachelor- und Master-Studierende der Physische und Humangeographie, Geologie, Paläontologie und Archäologie sind willkommen und werden von diesem Kurs profitieren. Eine Kombination aus Vorlesungen, Seminaren und praktischen Übungen.

    Qualifikationsziele:
    Die Studierenden verfügen über den aktuellsten Wissensstand zum Themenkomplex Umweltveränderungen und zu ihrem Einfluss auf die verschiedenen Aspekte des menschlichen Lebens während des Quartär-Zeitalters. Sie können unterschiedliche Umweltproxies „lesen“ und interpretieren, wobei der Hauptfokus auf biologischen Proxies von Umwelt- und Klimawandel liegt.
    Inhalte:
    Während der Vorlesungen und Seminare werden innovative Lernkonzepte entwickelt, um Umweltwandel (UW) zu verstehen, Anzeichen von UW und geoökologische Reaktionen darauf zu erkennen, Gründe für und Mechanismen von UW zu diskutieren. Muster und Prozesse der Interaktion von Mensch und Umwelt auf regionaler und lokaler Ebene werden anhand historischer Beispiele kritisch analysiert.  

    Students will have the most up-to-date knowledge on the subject of environmental change and their influence on the different aspects of human life during the Quaternary. They learn to "read" and interpret different environmental proxies, with the main focus on biological proxies of environmental and climate change. A combination of lectures, seminars and practical exersises.
