Die Numerik entwickelt und analysiert Methoden zur konstruktiven, letztlich zahlenmäßigen Lösung mathematischer Probleme. Angesichts der wachsenden Rechenleistung moderner Computer wächst die praktische Bedeutung numerischer Methoden bei der Simulation praktisch relevanter Phänomene.
Aufbauend auf den Grundvorlesungen in Analysis und Linearer Algebra sowie auf CoMa I und II geht es in der Numerik I um folgende grundlegenden Fragestellungen: nichtlineare Gleichungssysteme, Bestapproximation, lineare Ausgleichsprobleme, Hermite-Interpolation, Numerische Quadratur und schließlich Anfangswertprobleme für gewöhnliche Differentialgleichungen.
Als Motivation und Qualitätskriterium für die betrachteten Verfahren dienen, wie im wirklichen Leben, sowohl theoretische Analyse als auch numerische Experimente. Dementsprechend werden in den Übungen zur Vorlesung sowohl theoretische als auch praktische Aufgaben (mit Hilfe von Matlab) zu lösen sein.
