The seminar will be driven by student contributions in the form of presentations, weekly handouts summarizing the assigned texts, and active participation in discussions. Additional mandatory sessions will be held on November 14 and 15, with further details provided during the first meeting.
Kommentar
This course is a text-based seminar (Lektüreseminar) focused on exploring ancient and medieval Korean history within a global context through the lens of transdisciplinary material culture studies. The primary goal is to introduce students to key topics, issues, and questions involved in writing object-based histories of Korea. We will discuss the relationship between people and "things"—artifacts, commodities, religious paraphernalia, and other physical items—and how they were designed, made, used, and moved into/beyond the Korean Peninsula from/to neighboring regions like China and Japan, the Siberian Steppes, and along the Silk Road to the Middle East.
