Kommentar
This course will introduces students to a selection of Ottoman political writing and their authors from the late eighteenth century to the collapse of the Empire. The instructor will provide students with transcribed texts in Turkish (Romanized) together with their English translations. The course will focus on the translations and Turkish proficiency is not required or essential for the course. Through close reading a variety of texts written on questions of politics by Ottoman bureaucrats, statesmen, ulema and publicists, the class will familiarize the students with pressing questions of Muslim societies in the nineteenth century, such as economic development, equality, representation, accountability, democracy, freedom and religion in politics. Some of the names we will be looking at are Ahmed Resmi (d. 1783), Sadik Rifat Pasa (d. 1857), Namik Kemal (d. 1888), Ziya Pasa (d. 1880), Ali Suavi (d. 1877), Sariyerli Hoca Mehmed Sadik (d. 1873), Teodor Kasap (d. 1897) Yusuf Akçura (d. 1935) and Ziya Gökalp (d. 1924).
