Content:
Students will learn about flower structure and development and their implications for the evolution and systematics of flowering plant main lineages. They will also learn about the past and current hypotheses on their elusive origin and limitations that still prevent us to fully grasp the homology of their floral organs, and the latest reconstruction of the flower of their most recent common ancestor and successive diversification under natural and sexual selection.

This course will combine 12 lectures, seminars, and labs on:

  1. Structure and development of flowers
  2. Floral organ functions and pollination syndroms
  3. Floral diversity and evolutionary trends in members of flowering plant main lineages and families of:
ANA grade Magnoliids Monocotyledons Eudicotyledons (including basal eudicots and core eudictots) Core eudicots (including Fabids and Malvids in Rosids, and Campanulids and Lamids in Asterids)

NOTE: Lectures will be available ONE week before the corresponding seminar and lab.

Students have the fifth week to learn for the exam held on last Friday of course (19.06.2026)
