Departmental Women’s Representative and Gender Equality Officer
Welcome to the website of the Women’s Representative and Gender Equality Officer for the University Library, the University Archive, the Campus Library, and the Center for Digital Systems at Freie Universität Berlin.
A core aspect of our work involves promoting and establishing equity and equal opportunities. We approach this work with a multifaceted understanding of gender that goes beyond binary definitions.
While, until recently, the women’s representative was primarily tasked with promoting the rights of women* (people who identify as women), we feel equally obligated to advocate for other systematically disadvantaged genders in the name of equity. We have expanded the name of the office to reflect this and are happy to announce that the holder of this position will now officially be known as the women’s representative and gender equality officer.
Our responsibilities include advising and supporting all women*, helping to create the Plan for the Advancement of Women, and participating in hiring procedures and decision-making committees.
The women’s representative is an elected, two-year position. The woman* who holds this position is elected from a specific department or unit and carries out the role in addition to their professional duties.
We provide information on the following:
- Sexualized discrimination and violence
- Women’s studies and gender studies
- Measures and concepts for promoting equity
- Study/work as a parent, parental leave, managing care tasks
- Opportunities for the gender self-determination of transgender, intersex, and non-binary university members
