Academic identity management with ORCID

More and more researchers worldwide are using ORCID for networking and academic identity management. Click here to find out what advantages you can gain from using a personal ORCID iD.

What is ORCID?

  • ORCID stands for Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier and is an international, community-supported non-profit organisation
  • ORCID's global member community consists of universities, non-university research institutions, research funders, publishers and other stakeholders in the science system.
  • The aim of ORCID is to enable researchers to uniquely identify themselves on the web and thus increase their visibility. To this end, ORCID provides a digital personal identifier: the ORCID iD.

ORCID in Germany

  • Freie Universität Berlin is a member of the ORCID-Deutschland-Konsortiums, to which over 100 German universities and scientific institutions belong.
  • As a member of the consortium, Freie Universität Berlin recommends that all researchers use an ORCID iD. This recommendation is also part of Freie Universität's Open Access Policy.

Was ist die ORCID iD?

  • The ORCID iD is your permanent and unique identification number that uniquely identifies you internationally and distinguishes you from other scientists.
  • The ORCID iD is established as the worldwide de facto standard for scientific personal identification.
  • The ORCID iD is institution-independent and remains the same even if you change employer or research area.
  • You can obtain your ORCID iD by registering at orcid.org. Registration and use of your ORCID iD are free of charge.

The ORCID iD offers you advantages in many different areas!

  •     When you register with ORCID, you are given the opportunity to create an ORCID profile.
  •     The profile is a kind of digital business card and helps you to increase your visibility within the scientific community.
  •     Use ORCID iD and ORCID profile to network with other scientists and institutions.
  •     This fictitious example demonstrates what an ORCID profile can look like:

  • Research funding organisations increasingly expect scientists to use a unique identifier when submitting project proposals or reports.
  • The ORCID iD is favoured by many funding institutions.
  • By providing your ORCID iD, e.g. in your project proposal, you grant funding organisations easy access to all relevant information about your academic career, research and publications.
  • ORCID facilitates your communication with publishers and journals.
  • Use your ORCID iD when submitting publications so that the publisher or journal can uniquely identify you.
  • More and more literature databases are including the ORCID iDs of authors in the bibliographic data.
  • If you enter your ORCID iD in the publication process, you will therefore make your research results easier to find and ensure that no publication is overlooked when creating bibliometric indicators.
  • The publication list in your ORCID profile reliably documents your scientific achievements. You can export the list and use it elsewhere.
  • If you want to make it easier for yourself to maintain your publication list, you can use various ORCID functions.
  • The most important function is Search & Link. This function allows you to link your ORCID profile with services such as Crossref, DataCite, PubMed, OpenAIRE, Web of Science or Scopus.
  • This allows you to have your publication list updated automatically. Please note: If you link your ORCID profile to an external platform or organisation via Search & Link, you are appointing them as a Trusted Organization.
  • Also with the help of DOIs of your publications, you can quickly and easily create and maintain a publication list in your ORCID profile.
  • Include your ORCID iD in your email signature, on your website or on presentation slides to provide your colleagues with all the important information about your research and to network.

Your rights - data protection and privacy

  • A report commissioned by the German Research Foundation (DFG) confirmed the GDPR compliance of ORCID in 2017.
  • You are the owner of your ORCID iD. This means you have full control over the content of your ORCID profile at all times.
  • With the help of the graduated privacy and visibility settings, you alone determine which of your profile content is generally visible on the Internet and which can only be seen by so-called trusted parties.
