Wilhelm Schmidt-Biggemann is Professor of History of Philosophy and the Humanities at Freie Universität Berlin. He was educated at Ruhr Universität Bochum in Philosophy, German Studies, History, and Theology. He was a member of the research staff of the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel, where he wrote his Habilitation thesis on Early Modern Encyclopedias. He has been invited to take up numerous fellowships and guest professorships e.g. in Prague, Copenhagen, Philadelphia, Princeton, and Tel Aviv. From 2006 to 2012 he was speaker at the DFG Research Unit “Topik und Tradition”. Since 2008 he has been a member, and since 2012 speaker of the Review Board “Philosophy” of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Among the honors he won are the Golden Medal of the Karls University Prague (1993), and the Hamann Forschungspreis of the University of Münster (2013).
