Reflorestar o Pensamento: Indigenous literature and arts of Brazil as interventions for a sustainable world

Nov 27, 2025 - Nov 28, 2025

The Universities of Duisburg-Essen, Freie Universität Berlin, and Potsdam, together with the German House for Research and Innovation (DWIH) São Paulo, are organizing the workshop “Reflorestar o Pensamento: Indigenous Literatures and Arts of Brazil as Interventions for a Sustainable World” on November 27 and 28 in the Brazilian metropolis.
The focus will be on analyzing literary and artistic productions as aesthetic and political interventions in the current debate on climate change. Participation is free of charge; the registration form will be available shortly.

The event is part of a special funding program by DWIH São Paulo in connection with the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will take place in Belém in November. As part of this program, four initiatives by DWIH partner institutions were selected that address topics related to the conference in the capital of the state of Pará.

The workshop is aimed at researchers, students, and anyone else who is interested, and brings together authors, artists, and scientists to examine traditional indigenous narratives as forms of collective knowledge production.
The initiative is led by Professors Susanne Zepp-Zwirner (University of Duisburg-Essen) and Mariana Simoni (Free University of Berlin). Those who have confirmed their participation so far include Eliane Potiguara, Trudruá Dorrico, Auritha Tabajara, Graça Graúna, Glicéria Tupinambá, Daiara Tukano, Marilia Librandi, Jamille Pinheiro, Fernanda Pitta, Myrza Muniz, Uyra Sodoma, Lilly Baniwa, and Pedro Cesarino.

The event will take place in the auditorium of the Goethe-Institut São Paulo and will be broadcast online.
