Inaugural Lecture Prof. Dr. Lilia K. Moritz Schwarcz - Images of Freedom: Colonial History, Gender, and the Political Body

May 11, 2022 | 04:00 PM c.t. - 07:00 PM

The Brazilian scholar and publisher was awarded the Reimar Lüst Prize in 2021 (presented by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation) and will be conducting research at Freie Universität Berlin starting in the summer semester of 2022.

In her inaugural lecture on May 11, Professor Lilia K. Moritz Schwarcz will speak on:

Images of Freedom: Colonial History, Gender, and the Political Body.

This lecture is based on two almost equivalent images shown in two completely different contexts, with no other references to each other. The first was painted by the German artist Theodor Kaufmann - "Auf zur Freiheit" (1867) - and presented in New York. The second was painted by the French cartoonist François Biard and was titled "Fuga de escravos" (Flight of the Slaves), 1859. Using this painting, the lecture will explore the concept of the "present of the past." Colonial archives and museums are full of silences. Silences in the interior histories of the paintings. Silences in the bodies represented by "others".

The event will take place in presence. If you would like to attend, please register here.

The lecture will also be broadcast live on this website. The image broadcast will start at the beginning of the lecture.
