Open Call for Contributions: Virtual Conference “Teaching in Exile: Transnational Experiences in the Digital Age”, 18-19 November 2021

We invite scholars to contribute to our upcoming conference Teaching in Exile: Transnational Experiences in the Digital Age scheduled for 18-19 November 2021

News from Jun 24, 2021

The dissemination of knowledge is key to academic life. Teaching in Exile wishes to highlight the complex assemblage of opportunities and challenges in the field of teaching by focusing on the specific experiences of exiled scholars internationally. Although transnational networks, multi-language courses and digital tools have considerably changed the face of teaching in academia, restrictions to academic freedom or differential access to lectureships still pose challenges to how teaching is lived today. Teaching in Exile sheds light on these issues by encouraging a dialogue on three broad conference themes:

  • Taking Action in Teaching focuses on taking responsibility for endangered scholars and thought by discussing initiatives dedicated to emancipatory research and teaching.
  • Showing Off Science gathers experiences of exiled scholars and offers presentations on best practices in teaching.
  • Infrastructures of Inclusion aims at advancing democratic involvement in teaching.

Find more information in the Conference Outline.

We specifically encourage proposals for our theme Showing Off Science. We envision participants to prepare presentations - preferably a scientific poster - that will be presented via a digital fair during the conference. This is explicitly a suggestion and not fixed requirement for the theme: we are open to any other kind of format you choose to present your work (may it be a slides, video, audio, webpage, syllabus or other form of presentation). For more insight to the session, check our Conference Outline

We encourage international scholars from various disciplinary areas to partake in the conference to enrich the solution finding process and discussions on teaching.

Objectives

  • Analysis of the current situation of exiled scholars in the field of teaching
  • Evaluation of best practices in teaching
  • Identifying strategies for integrating a more diverse range of people and topics into teaching positions
  • Evaluation of individual and systemic hindrances and chances for teaching
  • Possibilities for shaping transnational networks of knowledge transfer with special reference to digital media
  • Specific experiences with co- and tandem-teaching
